Polaroid lift photo collections made by photographer Paul E Williams. "From the first time I made a Polaroid Lift I became fascinated by both the process and the outcome. I had to modify rubber spatula's and find rubber rollers and all in all it was a big adventure into the unknown. When you lifted off the emulsion from a 10x8 polaroid you end up with a glutinous loose mess of gelatine that has to be carefully unfolded and lifted onto art paper. If this is kept wet on the paper it is possible to move the gelatine into any shape you like. The emulsion is them rolled down to squeeze out the water from behind the gelatine and attach it to the art paper. This is both painstaking, precarious and expensive. It also required a 10x8 bellows camera and 10x8 polaroid back and processor. It is not surprising then that not that many people made Polaroid lifts and I don't really want to think how much each photo cost to make. In fact I have never costed any photo I have made as that crazily counter productive. I first saw something about Polaroid lifts in the Polaroid trade magazine, I was therefore surprised when Polaroid saw my prints that they asked me to write an article on how to make Polaroid Lifts and I did so. I don't like using technique blindly and I have come up with many new technique through my career and each evolved for very specific reasons. It was always annoying to see my technique copied and mis used by other photographers eager to jump on any band wagon and in the process devalue and ultimately destroy technique that I spent so much time creating. I chose my subject matter for Polaroid Lifts carefully then. I had become interested in pressed flowers and the way they folded into 2 dimensional shapes when pressed and dried. This seemed to be a perfect subject for Polaroid lifts as the folding of the emulsion complimented the folds in the press flowers. This is how the Flowerpress series came about which I duly published in 1991 or so. I used the technique for a Quaker Oats advertising campaign and for a Gordons Gin project. I also made probably the only animations using polaroid lifts one of which is called Icarus Rising and I will try to publish in my stories section. The Lifts in this series and other lifts earned me the a coveted Polaroid European Final Art Award in '93. I hope you enjoy them." Paul E Williams. Photo Wall Art Print Galleries of landscape photos and historic landmark places of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East by photographer Paul E Williams. The basis of the photo art print in these galleries is "the Past" and our place in it. "we can connect with the past and our our ancestors through the objects and buildings they crafted that survive for us to enjoy today, When you touch an ancient standing stone you can feel the mans hand who put the stone there 3000 years ago. Similarly when you look at an ancient, sculpture of rock carving you connect directly through sight with the hands that crafted them. The shape of buildings and style of paintings describes an era and mind set of a particular group of ancestors who left their mark for us to see. By looking at the great ruined palaces, castles and Chateaux built on dreams of power and wealth we can also see tangible proof that nothing lasts for ever, even the power of the all powerful. It is with these thought in mind that I created the photos in these galleries". Paul E Williams 2021. Photo Art Print Galleries of Reportage and Street People photos and pictures by photographer Paul E Williams. " Theses photo wall art galleries are dedicated to the people I never knew who populate the photos. The underlying theme in these galleries is people at play. "Being a photographer means that you are always observing the world and the tiny moments that, when captured, tell a story. The photos in this gallery are dedicated to this split second when I made a connection with people I didn't know. These people entered my consciousness in a split second which caused my finger to press the button on my camera. Usually with street and reportage photography I find that the first time I consciously see all that my sub conscious saw, in that spit second of taking a photo, is when I make a print of it. The freezing of time in a photograph freezes movement turning people into living statues held forever in one pose. It is the alignment, juxtaposition and abstract poses that make street photography so captivating to me. A frozen gesture or movement that creates a story and world all of its own. It is to these brief moments in time my mind observed and found interesting that these photographs are dedicated". Paul E Williams 2021. By The Sea is an ongoing reportage people and landscape series of art photos by photographer Paul E Williams. The seaside is like a magnet to most people who find it a place where they can let their hair down and revert to the simple pleasures childhood. The sea though has moulded mankind's activities for millennia. The sea not only yielded food but was until recent times a much safer way to travel between destinations than overland. Seaside towns and ports are therefore often dripping with history, and their architecture has a very different flavour to that of inland towns. In short By The Sea explores the relationship between people and the sea in all its aspects.

English Surfaces - Lymington No , A series of reportage photos exploring what makes England English in the 21st century, especially now England had become a fortress post Brexit Island. The series of photos searches England for the reasons 36% of its population voted in 2016 to leave the second largest trading block in the world in favour of isolation. “As an English communist who considers himself to be a European and Internationalist ahead of being English, I am aware of the damage nationalism has caused throughout world history and its continuing destabilising power today. With this in mind I decided to take a look at England and try to see why 36% voted to leave Europe in 2016, and try to discover what is so special about England that the English have erected a wall around their Island”. Photo Wall Art Print Galleries of Ancient and Historic art and antiquities in both colour and black and white by photographer Paul E Williams. "This collection of photo prints is dedicated to the antiquities and art found in the museums of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. 10 years ago I realised how few high quality photos there are available for print of the truly wonderful art that has somehow survived down the ages. There is something truly miraculous that connects us directly with our ancestors in these works of art. From clay dolls thousands of years old to the great sculptures of Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome and on through history to the middle ages we have been left an incredible treasure trove of wonderful objects and art. It only seems right that these gifts from the past should be available for us to hang on our walls so we can obtain daily inspiration from them. It was in this spirt that I started photographing the great museum antiquities you will find on this site and in these print galleries. There are over 20,000 pictures to browse from which I have made special print editions that will be added to this collection as an on going project. I hope you enjoy these truly inspirational works of art and antiquities." Paul Williams. Pictures photos and Images of the historic landmark sites and places of Croatia. Croatia, officially the Republic of Croatia is a country at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe on the Adriatic Sea. It borders Slovenia to the northwest, Hungary to the northeast, Serbia to the east. The ethnogenesis of Croats is uncertain, and there are several competing theories, Slavic and Iranian being the most frequently put forward. The most widely accepted of these, the Slavic theory, proposes migration of White Croats from White Croatia during the Migration Period. During the migration of Croats the citizens of the destroyed Salona escaped to Trogir. Initially the Roman Tragurium was one of the Dalmatian City-States. From the 9th century on, Trogir paid tribute to Croatian rulers and to the Byzantine empire. The diocese of Trogir was established in the 11th century and in 1107 it was chartered by the king of Hungary, Croatia and Dalmatia Coloman, gaining thus its autonomy as a town. In 1123 Trogir was conquered and almost completely demolished by the Saracens. However, Trogir recovered in a short period to experience powerful economic prosperity in the 12th and the 13th centuries, with some autonomy under Venetian leadership. In 1242 King Béla IV of Hungary found refuge there as he fled the Mongols, who were unable to storm the island city. In 1420 the period of a long-term Venetian rule began and lasted nearly four centuries. The history of Trgir is the history of all the Croatian coastal town and they became Venetian towns until the fall of Venice in 1797, when they became a part of the Habsburg Empire,

Pictures photos images of England and English landmarks and historical monuments. England occupies the South west of the British Isles and is in Union with Wales and Scotland. Having been covered in Glaciers until 20,000 years ago England is relatively flat country with low hills and meandering rivers. The highest mountain in England is Scafell Pike in the Lake district which reaches a height of 3,209 Ft. Despite it having been covered in Glaciers for much of its recent geological history, England has a rich history with extensive Neolithic monuments such as Stone Henge and Avebury. Neolithic burial sites and stone rings can be found all over England particularly in Cornwall where the high moorlands have small stone Quoits, that were the stone centre of an earth burial mound. England is rich in minerals and its fertility made it a prize picking for the Romans who after many attempts eventually conquered it. Much of the Roman archaeology in England remains buried below later towns that were built over Roman settlements. The largest monument in England though is Hadrian’s Wall built across the North of England from about 122 AD. The wall which is 73 miles (117.5 KM) long was made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. When the Romans withdrew from England the Germanic tribes such as the Anglo-Saxons took their place. During the Anglo-Saxon period an English nation was formed that adopted Christianity. Anglo-Saxon art is both intricate and beautiful as can be seen by the illuminated Gospels that came from great Monasteries they built at Lindisfarne or Holy Island. King Alfred was both a learned and cultured King whose court was on of the greatest of the Middle Ages. The Christian monasteries of Northern England became the focus of Viking raids in 793 when Lindisfarne was attacked and sacked. This was the beginning of a Viking Age in England and the Viking came to occupy and settle most of northern England. In 1066 Normans, a derivation of North Men meaning Vikings, under William Duke of Normandy conquered England and subjugated the Anglo Saxons. The Normans were Christian and built the great Cathedrals that we see today in many English Cities. The Normans were also patrons of Church monasteries and paid for many ecclesiastical building projects. They were also great castle builders from which they stamped their authority over England. From the combining of these many cultures England developed a style that is its own. The Tudors had their own style of building that even though it was based on Renaissance thinking bears little resemblance to Italian Renaissance architecture. The Baroque largely passed England by as it was seen to be a Roman Catholic style. The English did though embrace the work of the Italian Palladio and most of the stately Homes of England owe their columned frontages to his influence. Pictures images and photos of the Historic landmark places and sites of France. Photos of museum antiquities form the great Archaeological Museums of France. In the High Middle Ages, France was a highly decentralized feudal kingdom in which the authority of the king was barely felt. King Philip Augustus achieved remarkable success in the strengthening of royal power and the expansion of his realm, doubling its size and defeating his rivals. By the end of his reign, France had emerged as the most powerful state in Europe. In the mid-14th century, French monarchs were embroiled in a series of dynastic conflicts with their English counterparts, collectively known as the Hundred Years' War, from which they ultimately emerged victorious. The French nobility played a prominent role in most Crusades to restore Christian access to the Holy Land. French knights made up the bulk of the steady flow of reinforcements throughout the two-hundred-year span of the Crusades, in such a fashion that the Arabs uniformly referred to the crusaders as Franj caring little whether they really came from France. The French Crusaders also imported the French language into the Levant, making French the base of the lingua franca (litt. "Frankish language") of the Crusader states. Gothic art was a style of medieval art that developed in Northern France out of Romanesque art in the 12th century AD, led by the concurrent development of Gothic architecture. It spread to all of Western Europe, and much of Northern, Southern and Central Europe, The earliest Gothic art was monumental sculpture, on the walls of Cathedrals and abbeys. Gothic art emerged in Île-de-France, France, in the early 12th century at the Abbey Church of St Denis built by Abbot Suger.[1] The style rapidly spread beyond its origins in architecture to sculpture, both monumental and personal in size, textile art, and painting, which took a variety of forms, including fresco, stained glass, the illuminated manuscript, and panel painting. French Monastic orders, especially the Cistercians and the Carthusians, were important builders who disseminated the style and developed distinctive variants of it across Europe.

Pictures photos images of Georgia (country) historic & landmark places, Churches and monasteries as well a Georgian museum antiquities. Georgia (country) is situated on the south eastern shores of the Blacks Sea. On its eastern borders it is separated from Russia and the Russian Republics by the high Caucasus range of mountains with peaks of over 5000 m. Due to the inaccessible mountain regions of Georgia, the country has many ethnic groups that have been isolated from thousands of years and have developed distinctive language and cultural traditions. The best known cultural group of Georgia are the Svan who live in inaccessible high mountain valleys at the foot of the high Caucasus. The highest village is Ushguli in the Upper Svaneti 30 miles from Mestia. Ushguli is a group of four remote villages. At 2,200 m (7217 Ft) above sea level in the Caucasus Mountains these are the highest inhabited villages in Europe. Chvibiani has well preserved stone Svanetian defensive tower houses attached to stone family houses which date from the 9th century. Dominating Ushguli is Mount Shkhara is the highest mountain in the Georgian Caucasus range at 5,068 m (16,627 Ft) above sea level. e the winter Ushguli is cut off from the outside world for 6 months from November to the end of April. Even when the snows have gone the track that runs from Mestia, 30 miles away, can take 3 hours to drive. Sandwiched between Europe and Asia, Georgia has often been fought over and conquered but the Georgian people have always managed to keep their cultural identity. During classical times Georgia was at the centre of the Roman Persian struggles in the area for supremacy. This continued until medieval times until the Arab incursion into the area in the 6th century. Throughout all of these conflicts invaders generally preferred to keep the Georgian monarchy in tact demanding their loyalty. Influences from Persia meant that from the first centuries A.D, the cult of Mithras, pagan beliefs, and Zoroastrianism were commonly practised in Georgia. Political expediency persuaded King Mirian III in 337 AD to align himself with the new Roman religious practises, declaring Christianity as the state religion in Georgia, making it the earliest Christian country to do so along with Armenia. This make the Georgian Orthodox church one of the oldest. In remote regions though pagan practices were slow to disappear, and they still continue today with priests sacrificing cockerels, lambs and goats outside churches, given as gifts by members of the congregation to celebrate a births , marriage s or just good luck. Georgian Orthodox churches and cathedrals have a very distinctive architecture, with high central straight sided round towers. The insides are decorated in Byzantine style frescoes and mosaics, with icons being of great importance. Hungary pictures images photos of the historic and landmark sites. Hungary (Magyarország) is a landlocked country in Central Europe. The territory of present-day Hungary has for centuries been a crossroads for various peoples, including Celts, Romans, Germanic tribes, Huns, West Slavs and the Avars. The foundations of the Hungarian state were established in the late ninth century AD with the conquest of the Carpathian Basin by Hungarian grand prince Árpád. His great-grandson Stephen I ascended the throne in 1000, converting his realm to a Christian kingdom. By the 12th century, Hungary became a regional power, reaching its cultural and political height in the 15th century. Following the Battle of Mohács in 1526, it was partially occupied by the Ottoman Empire (1541–1699). Hungary came under Habsburg rule at the turn of the 18th century, later joining with the Austrian Empire to form Austria-Hungary, a major power into the early 20th century. Budapest is the capital and the most populous city of Hungary, The history of Budapest began when an early Celtic settlement transformed into the Roman town of Aquincum, the capital of Lower Pannonia. The Hungarians arrived in the territory in the late 9th century, but the area was pillaged by the Mongols in 1241–42. Re-established Buda became one of the centres of Renaissance humanist culture by the 15th century. The Battle of Mohács, in 1526, was followed by nearly 150 years of Ottoman rule. After the reconquest of Buda in 1686, the region entered a new age of prosperity, with Pest-Buda becoming a global city after the unification of Buda, Óbuda, and Pest on 17 November 1873, with the name 'Budapest' given to the new capital.

Pictures of Italy and Italian landmark historical monuments and cities. Italy is so rich in culture and scenery that it is many things to many people. To some the Italy is summed up by a romantic trip in a Gondola on a Venetian canal, to others Italy is summed up by the Romans and great historic monuments like the Colosseum. For many a walk around the narrow lanes an ancient Tuscan hill town to a medieval square with a cafe is heaven, whist others search out Renaissance master pieces in the small towns and villages all over Italy. Italy has been at the heart of what has become European culture for over 2000 years. The Romans were the first Italians stamp their laws, culture and art on the Mediterranean with such gusto that they have never been written out of history since. The void of the decline of the Western Romans in Italy was filled by so called barbarians such as the Lombards who added another layer of culture whilst trying to keep the idea of the Roman Empire alive. This job though fell to the Roman Catholic Church and its Popes who from Rome slowly took control of western and northern Europe and made all of its kings kneel at their feet. For large periods of time the Popes were from the aristocratic families of Italy who treated the post as their right of inheritance. These Italian Popes grew rich and powerful by peddling their divine authority over the politics of medieval Europe both making and breaking Kings. The tithes and indulgences the Church received made the Roman Church the biggest single land owner in Italy and the rest of Europe. Until the Risorgimento was completed in 1871 Italy was made up of feudal states with feudal Lords that were in more or less constant conflict. This is why Italy has so many incredible hill towns full of fine buildings and artworks. Every town and city was the thiefdom of a great or petty lord who wanted to show off his wealth, culture and learning through the works of architecture and art he commissioned. The church in Italy were the major patrons of Romanesque art and architecture but the Italian Renaissance saw secular patrons such as the Medici’s in Florence or the Sforza’s in Milan who commissioned the great Italian artists and brought them to their courts.Great Italian republics like Venice were patrons of new movements such as the Baroque but Venetian excesses were matched by the great courts of the Kings of Naples at Caserta. Until 1871 the whole of Italy played an incredibly expensive game of one upmanship which has left it with an incredible legacy of history, art and architecture. Photos, pictures & images of Greece and the Greek Island historic and landmark places as well as Ancient Greek museum antiquities for the great museums of Greece. Greece is considered the cradle of Western civilization, being the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, Western literature, historiography, political science, major scientific and mathematical principles, theatre and the Olympic Games. From the eighth century BC, the Greeks were organised into various independent city-states, known as poleis (singular polis), which spanned the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Philip II of Macedon united most of present-day Greece in the fourth century BC, with his son Alexander the Great rapidly conquering much of the ancient world, from the eastern Mediterranean to India. In 499 BC, the Ionian city states under Persian rule rebelled against their Persian-supported tyrant rulers.[22] Supported by troops sent from Athens and Eretria, they advanced as far as Sardis and burnt the city before being driven back by a Persian counterattack. Though heavily outnumbered, the Athenians—supported by their Plataean allies—defeated the Persian hordes at the Battle of Marathon, and the Persian fleet turned tail. The Hellenistic period lasted from 323 BC, the end of the wars of Alexander the Great, to the annexation of Greece by the Roman Republic in 146 BC. Although the establishment of Roman rule did not break the continuity of Hellenistic society and culture, which remained essentially unchanged until the advent of Christianity, it did mark the end of Greek political independence. The Greek peninsula came under Roman rule during the 146 BC conquest of Greece after the Battle of Corinth. Macedonia became a Roman province while southern Greece came under the surveillance of Macedonia's prefect; however, some Greek poleis managed to maintain a partial independence and avoid taxation. the term "Greek Orthodox" has been used to describe all Eastern Orthodox churches in general, since "Greek" in "Greek Orthodox" can refer to the heritage of the Byzantine Empire.[8][9][10] During the first eight centuries of Christian history, most major intellectual, cultural, and social developments in the Christian Church took place within the Empire or in the sphere of its influence, where the Greek language was widely spoken and used for most theological writings. Greek Orthodox churches are united in communion with each other, as well as with the other Eastern Orthodox Churches.

Pictures & images of Morocco historical and landmark sites. Morocco occupies the north west of Africa and its coastline stretches west from Algeria along the Mediterranean through the straits of Gibraltar then south along the Atlantic. Morocco has been inhabited from as long ago as 190,000 BC when the Maghreb, the name of the land running across Morocco into Algeria and Tunisia, was a fertile Savanna. A large part of northern Morocco is mountainous and three mountain chains run across Morocco from west to east. The most northerly mountain chain is the Rif mountains. In the middle of the country are the High Atlas mountains which are divided from the Low Atlas Mountains in the south by a wide valley. South of the low Atlas are great desert plains that run into the Sahara. Morocco is home to the Berber people who in Roman times ruled Numidia which is in present day Algeria and Tunisia as well as Mauritania. By the 11th century Morocco’s Berbers had become Islamic after long colonisation by the Arabs. Arab rule was though weak and the Berbers formed their own kingdom with Arab overlords. In 711 the Berbers of Morocco invaded the Iberian Peninsular, present day Spain, and by 721 they were raiding as far north as Toulouse. The Berbers occupied the whole of the Iberian Peninsular apart from a small area in the north west and were not expelled completely until 1492 . Today Morocco is a forward thinking Monarchy with the young and dynamic King Mohammed VI as its Monarch. Morocco is an incredible country with an extraordinary range of diverse landscapes. The Rif mountains of the north are lush and grown a diverse range of crops from olives and to tea. The high Atlas is an arid snow capped range of mountains that lead south into arid semi desert where palm plantations fill the deep gorges cut by the snow melt waters from the Atlas. South of the Atlas is desert full of Oasis and camels with a small belt of sand dunes of the Sahara before Morocco reaches the Algerian Border. To the west is the Atlantic ocean whose temperate westerly winds keep the coast cool. Moroccos past can be seen in the great cities of Marrakech and Fez and great adobe Berber palaces can be seen all along the old camel trails that camel caravans used to bring goods from south of the Sahara north to trade in Morocco. It is is fascinating country that is easy to explore by car though a four wheel drive will be needed to explore the desert and high Atlas mountains where Berber nomad families still live as they have done for thousands of years. Morocco is a country of contrast with ultra modern cites like Casablanca and Berbers still living in caves and using donkeys to bring hay down from the high mountain pastures to their small remote villages. Our pictures, photos and images are dedicated to what is a spectacular country with some great landscapes and towns. Pictures and Images of Sardinia and its historical and archaeological sites. Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean and an autonomous region of Italy. Sardinia has the most ancient geology in Europe and it has been inhabited since the Upper Palaeolithic times ( 50,000 and 10,000 BC). The peoples that have lived on Sardinia have left an incredibly rich archaeology with prehistoric buildings, necropolis, temples and towers known as Nuraghe. They left no writings though so little is known about the cultures and motivations of these prehistoric cultures. The pre-Nuragic peoples of Sardinia left many tombs cut into rock known as Domus de Janus or “Fairy Houses”. From around 1500 BC a civilisation known today as Nuragic developed building towers known as Nuraghe after which they are named. There are some 6500 known Nuraghe sites in Sardinia of which about 500 have been excavated. The Nuraghe were high stone towers rising up to 30 meters high. Nuraghe are unique in the Mediterranean and were the second tallest structures at this time, beaten only by the Pyramids at Giza. The Nuragic peoples were probably indigenous to Sardinia and were the descendants of the Neolithic peoples of Sardinia. The Nuragic civilisation grew out of Bronze age technology and the high density of communities that developed on Sardinia led to the need to fortify villages against raids from neighbours. The Nuragic people lived in round stone walled huts with thatched roofs that were built around the Nuraghe towers. Nuragic Villages were not planned as their hap hazard ruins show. There do seem to have been communal meeting hut but little else is known about the political structure and rituals of their society. Apart from the Nuraghe towers of Sardinia the other great structure left by the Nuragic people was the so called Giants tomb. These tombs are so named due to their size. Up to 27 meters long they are ccomposed of a single long narrow chamber which led to the belief that they were burial chambers of a giant. In front of the entrance to the giants tomb chamber a forecourt was built with semi circular walls radiating from the tombs entrance. Presumably this area was used for funereal rituals. After they lost the Punic wars against the Romans, Sardinia was annexed by Rome. The Roman occupation of the island ended the Nuragic civilisation although many Nuragic people retreated to the mountains and remained untouched by Rome until about the 2nd century AD. Although both the Romans and earlier Greeks wrote about the Nuragic peoples of Sardinia not enough information remains to piece together any of the traditions or religious beliefs of these early Sardinians. An idea of the sophistication of the Nuragic people can be seen in the haunting sculptures of warriors excavated from the Necropolis of Monte Prama. Images pictures & photos of Scotland. Scotland is a beautiful country famous for its heather clad mountains and islands. It is an ancient country which dates back to Neolithic times when ancient peoples built great monuments like the Ring of Brodgar on Orkney. The first visitors to Scotland were hunter gathers, 12800 years ago, who followed the receding glaciers in search of food. The first villages in Scotland were built around around 6000 years ago and Scotland has the most well preserved Neolithic village in Europe on the Isle of Orkney called Skara Brae. By the late Bronze age Celts had set up trading maritime routes and celtic burial remains have been found as far as north Africa and on the silk route in the Near East. The celts were one of the dominate tribes of western Europe until the Romans arrived and conquered them. The Romans drew a line literally in the form of Hadrian's wall across the north of England. This created the dividing line that is just south of the present borders of Scotland. In 1502, James IV of Scotland signed the Treaty of Perpetual Peace with Henry VII of England. He married Margaret Tudor, Henry VII daughter, in August 1503 paving the way for the Union of the Crowns of England and Scotland. On 24 July 1567 to the Stewart King James VI of Scotland who became James I of England and made the union of the Scottish and English crowns. Scottish Stewart monarchs sat on the throne of the United Kingdom until the Roman Catholic James II was deposed in 1688. James I was succeeded by his daughter Mary and he husband William who in turn were succeeded by Queen Anne then in1703 George Elector of Hanover became King of England but the Scottish Parliament did not formally settle his succession to the Scottish throne. The question arose of Georges rights of Accession as the Scots as he was not a Stuart but in 1707 the Scottish and English Parliaments signed the Union with England Act. This led to the Jacobite rising of 1715 when James Francis Edward Stuart attempted to take the throne The Jacobites were successful in central Scotland but they failed to take Edinburgh and after many battles the rebellion faltered in 1725. The failure of the Jacobites led to a brutal repression of the Scots. In1746 Act of Proscription required all swords held by Scots to be surrendered and banned the wearing of clan tartans and kilts. More notorious were the Highland Clearances. These were stated as experiments in making agriculture viable in the Highlands but resulted in the exploitation by ruthless Lords of the peasants of the Highlands. Scotland is steeped in history and the old enmity with England surfaces every time the two countries play each other at Rugby. Scotland is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt countries in Europe and is well worth a visit but be sure to take waterproof clothing. Pictures of Sicily and Sicilian landmarks and historical monuments. Sicily is one of the most surprising Islands in the Mediterranean and was an at the centre of ancient and medieval Mediterranean history. The ancient greeks realised the potential of the fertile plains of Sicily and built the new city states of Magna Graecia in Sicily. Great ancient Greek cities like Syracuse can be found on Sicily and it was there that Archimedes had his eureka moment. All around the southern coast of Sicily are important archaeological and UNESCO World Heritage sites, so If you want to see some of the best Greek Temples or Greek theatres go to Sicily. The Carthaginians realised the potential of Sicily and came into conflict with both the Greeks and later the Romans who occupied Sicily in 143 BC. Many of the Punic War battle between the Romans and Carthaginians took place off the shores of Sicily and despite the incredible efforts of Hannibal crossing the alps into Italy, the Carthaginians eventually lost. The Romans developed Sicily into a grain production Island. Huge estates produced wheat that was handed out as the dole to the citizens of Rome. Sicilian Romans grew rich on the land and the extent of their wealth can be seen today at the ruins of Villa Romana del Casale. The Villa de Casale is in the heart of Sicily and was at a centre of a huge latifundium, agricultural estate, around the 4th century AD. The site was excavated in the 1960s to reveal the largest in situ Roman mosaics yet found. The mosaics of the Villa are both large and sumptuous depicting hunting scenes, wild animals from Africa, scenes from the Circus and the famous Bikini Girls, Roman women exercising in Bikini style dress. When the Western Roman Empire went into decline Sicily was occupied by the Ostrogoths but in the 6th century the Eastern Roman Byzantines reconquered the Island and held the Sicily until it was conquered in 827 by Islamic Berbers and Arabs. The arabic influences are still visible in Sicily today. The Arabs were skilled at irrigation and brought exotic fruits such as lemons to Sicily. The value and skill of Islamic Sicilians was realised in 1030 when Sicily was conquered by Normans. Rather than expelling the Arabs the Normans let them stay. Under Roger II Sicily became not only a tolerant Kingdom where Christians, Jew and Muslims lived in peace together but also a major centre of Culture. The Norman kings embraced Muslim culture as can be seen in the Palatine Palace Chapel in the Norman Palace in Palermo. The interior decoration of the Palatine Chapel fuses Byzantine Roman Mosaics with Berber designs to make a political statement. This open minded thinking attracted the great artists, writers and thinkers to the Sicilian court of Roger II. Download pictures of Sicily as stock photos or buy as photo wall art on line.

Pictures, photos & images of Tunisia, North Africa. Tunisia is a country famous for its friendly inhabitants as well as its diversity of landscape. Along the Northern coast of Tunisia are the end of the Atlas mountains whose gentle slopes are covered with lush sub tropical forests producing cork. As you travel south the mountains quickly give way to the great plains of Tunisia which roll south becoming more arid until they become the Sahara desert. The best recorded tribe of the Magreb are the Berbers but it was the Phoenicians that put the Magreb on the map when they built their great city of Carthage in what is northern Tunisia today. The Carthaginians grew wealthy trading the produce of the rich farm lands of Tunisia. Their ambitions though became their downfall when they colonised Sicily, and came into conflict with the Romans who were colonising the island from the north. This led to the great Punic wars between Carthage and Rome which eventually culminated in the fall of Carthage in 149 BC and the colonisation of Tunisia by the Romans. When the Western Roman Empire started to collapse in the fifth century and the Roman stronghold failed, Vandals took Tunisia for a short time but their ruled declined quickly returning much of Tunisia to local Berber rule. The Vandals were finally removed by Emperor Justinian In AD 533 and the Romans staved of the first devastating raids by Arab Muslims that swept out of the desert conquering large part of the Eastern Roman Emire. The Maghreb fell to the Muslims in 698 and the native Berbers soon converted to Islam and became the dominant tribe of the region developing a sophisticated civilisation and culture. The new muslim rulers did not occupy the old Roman towns preferring to build their new towns nearby. This has left present day Tunisia with a wealth of Roman remains, so many in fact that only a small proportion have been excavated to date. The dry conditions of Tunisia also preserved the mosaic floors of the great Roman Villas and buildings in Tunisia. The volume of mosaic finds in Tunisia and both the quality and incredible preservation means that Tunisia has the greatest collection of Roman mosaics in the world. The Bardo museum in Tunis has been purpose built to display hundreds of exquisite mosaics. The Berbers have also left their mark on Tunisia. The Berbers grew wealthy by trading high value goods across the Sahara desert. Great camel trains would bring goods north from the African heart land. To guanatee a safe food supply the Berbers but Ksour ( singular Ksar) which were fortified granaries. These Ksour consist of ghorfas which are vaulted rooms used by the Berber people for storing grain. Each ghorfa is a self contained unit and they were built on top of each other in continuous circles or squares with doors only opening on the inside to create the 3 or 4 story high walls. Pictures & images of the United Kingdom (UK) of Great Britain. Photos of historic sites of the United Kingdom including Churches, monasteries and archaeological sites. The terms United Kingdom and Great Britain and of great confusion to those who live within the political entity. Is is very confusing to be English, British and come from the United Kingdom. The British Isles are a group of islands off the north west coast of continental Europe. In these Islands are the countries of Ireland, Northern Island, Wales, Scotland and England as well as the self-governing British Crown dependency of the Isle of Man. Great Britain is the largest Island of the British Isles to the south west of which is England, to the north of which is Scotland and in the west centre of which is Wales. Great Britain is the largest island in Europe and the ninth largest in the world. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island is a sovereign state ruled by a monarch. It comprises the countries of Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Island. The first Acts of Union was passed in 1536 which saw Wales being annexed by England. In 1707 when the Scottish King James VI also became James I of England, England Wales and Scotland became the unified Kingdom of Britain. In 1801 The Kingdom of Ireland was merged to become the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1916 southern Ireland became independent leaving Northern Ireland as part of the United Kingdom. The United kingdom has always been famous as a maritime kingdom and with 7,723 miles of coastline it is hardly surprising. Great Britain has one of the richest histories of Europe with some of the best Neolithic sites in Europe. The history of the United Kingdom has always been tied closely to France. In 1066 the Duke of Normandy conquered England stating a long line of English Kings that were also vassals of the King of France. The Scottish Kings allied themselves with the French against the English and until a Scottish King ascended to the throne of England as well, there was constant friction between the three countries. Today the United Kingdom has the sixth largest economy in the world and has been at the centre of world politics for 300 years. Images, pictures and photos of Cymru, Wales. Wales is a country in the the British Isles. bordered by England to its west and the Irish Sea to its east. In the north of Wales are great mountains of Snowdonia and in the south of Wales were the great coalfields that fuelled the Industrial Revolution in Britain. Hunter gathered first came to Wales as the great glaciers of the Ice age receded. Form about 6000 BC Neolithic farmers arrived and by the Bronze age Wales was part of the iron age Celtic Maritime trading route. In 48AD the Romans started to conquer Wales and 30 years later their task was complete. The Romans exploited the rich mineral deposits in Wales and mined copper, gold and lead. In their 300 years of occupation the Romans did not manage to Romanise all of Wales, so when they left much of the old Celtic system remained. As in rest of Medieval Europe, Wales was a violent place where petty lords raided their neighbours for booty. In 1066 William the Conqueror subjugated England and found that the borders with Wales were ruled by independent Marcher Lords who were subjects of neither the Welsh or English Kings. It suited the Kings of England to allow these Lords to create a buffer zone against incursion from the Welsh tribes. The March of Wales existed for 450 years and was not abolished until the act of Union in 1536. The Prince of Wales pledged their fealty to the Kings of England but in 1277 disputes between the Prince of Wales and Edward the 1st led to the invasion of Wales. This culminated in 1282 when Edward took control of Wales and made his son Prince of Wales, a situation that remains today. Edward fortified Wales with huge Castles that still dominate parts of Wales. These great castles were at the cutting edge of military engineering at the time and this has been recognised today by them being listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Wales is a magical country with many Neolithic sites set against spectacular scenery. Buy as high resolution stock royalty free images of travel images to download on line or buy as photo art prints.

Pictures, Images & Photos of UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. This is embodied in an international treaty called the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage , adopted by UNESCO in 1972 In 1972 a UNESCO World Heritage drew up a convention setting out the duties of States Parties in identifying potential sites and their role in protecting and preserving them. By signing the Convention, each country pledges to conserve not only the World Heritage sites situated on its territory, but also to protect its national heritage. The overarching benefit of ratifying the World Heritage Convention is that of belonging to an international community of appreciation and concern for universally significant properties that embody a world of outstanding examples of cultural diversity and natural wealth A key benefit of ratification, particularly for developing countries, is access to the World Heritage Fund . Annually, about US$4 million is made available to assist States Parties in identifying, preserving and promoting World Heritage sites. Emergency assistance may also be made available for urgent action to repair damage caused by human-made or natural disasters. In the case of sites included on the List of World Heritage in Danger , the attention and the funds of both the national and the international community are focused on the conservation needs of these particularly threatened sites Today, the World Heritage concept is so well understood that sites on the List are a magnet for international cooperation and may thus receive financial assistance for heritage conservation projects from a variety of sources. Sites inscribed on the World Heritage List also benefit from the elaboration and implementation of a comprehensive management plan that sets out adequate preservation measures and monitoring mechanisms. In support of these, experts offer technical training to the local site management team. Finally, the inscription of a site on the World Heritage List brings an increase in public awareness of the site and of its outstanding values, thus also increasing the tourist activities at the site. When these are well planned for and organized respecting sustainable tourism principles, they can bring important funds to the site and to the local economy. Images, pictures & photos of Neolithic and prehistoric archaeological sites, prehistoric art and prehistoric artefacts. Pictures of prehistoric ring circles, dolmen burial sites, prehistoric rock art and neolithic village ruins. Prehistoric or prehistory refers to the periods and civilisations that left no written records of their existence. This means that the dating of prehistory varies in different parts of the world. For example the prehistoric iron age cultures of Orkney left no written record whilst the Hittites of the Near East who lived at the same time did. The Enlightenment of the early 19the century began the idea of prehistory as a way of separating early primitive man from what they saw as the great civilisations and therefore sophisticated cultures of antiquity, such as the Egyptians and Greeks. This led to prehistory being largely ignored by the Enlightenment and it was not until the 1970’s, when radiocarbon dating opened the door to British prehistory, that the prehistoric civilisations of the British Isles have been seriously. New archaeological technique have led to the beginning of an understanding of the incredible achievements of prehistoric man. Neolithic means new stone age and refers to the period before metal tools and weapons were invented. During this period people started to settle and make farming and fishing settlements. Around 9500 BC the Sumarians in Mesopotamia started the first known agricultural civilisations. By 3000 BC settled communities were spread right across the world. Once people stopped being nomadic hunter gathers they started creating civilisations with cultural activities. Monumental building started with great sites like Stonehenge and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The cultures of the Near East quickly created stable systems that used writing in their administrations. This meant that the mysteries of these civilisations became unlocked once their language on their clay tablets and artworks were understood. The civilisations of northern Europe did not develop writing so still remain a mystery today. They left us though great monumental archaeological remains and the study of these and new finds are opening the door on the Neolithic past of northern Europe.

Pictures photos images of historic archaeological site, ancient artefacts & ancient antiquities from the ancient civilisations of Europe, the Mediterranean, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Persia and North Africa. Mesopotamia is often described as the cradle of civilisation and it is certainly true that some of the earliest civilisations developed in the “Golden Triangle” between the Tigris and Euphrates from about the 6th millennium BC. As with all ancient history this time line is being pushed back all the time with new discoveries in Anatolia and new techniques archeologists use to date sites. The story of the ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia was in constant flux with small city states rising to power and concurring neighbouring city states for short periods of time before falling themselves to newcomers. Mesopotamia is largely a flat plain with few natural barriers to invasions of nomadic tribes who periodically swept into the area. By the middle Bronze Age, 2000 - 1500 BC, four powers has risen to dominate Mesopotamia, Anatolia and North Africa, the Egyptians, the Assyrians, The Hittites & The Babylonians, who waxed and waned through this period. The best known ancient world civilisation are the Egyptians with their enigmatic hieroglyphs, landmark sites such as the Pyramids and the incredible volume of Egyptian artefacts in every major museum of the world, the ancient Egyptians have a head start on every other ancient civilisation. The Babylonians are remembered for their “hanging gardens” even though none have ever been found, and the Ancient Assyrians are known thanks again to the huge quantities of monumental stone relief panels and statues that are in many of the worlds great museums. A lesser known ancient civilisation is the ancient Hittites. The Hittites are mentioned in the Bible and scholars thought that they were a small tribe living in the Palestine area. It wasn't until 1906 when excavations at Boğazköy (Hattusa) by archaeologist Hugo Winckler found a royal archive with 10,000 cuneiform tablets that the Ancient Hittites were re-discovered and their place as a great ancient Empire that rivalled Egypt and Ancient Assyria was disclosed. 100 years later there is still much about the Ancient Hittites for scholars to argue over. With new archaeological techniques the ancient world of Europe, the Near East and North Africa is becoming clearer through the mists of time. What is becoming clear is the Ancient World civilisations were vibrant sophisticated places with huge monumental buildings, city walls, palaces and temples decorated with often lavish artworks. Anatolia is the area east of the Bosphorus today known as Asian Turkey. Anatolia has a very long coastline that stretches from Greece to Syria. Inland from the coastal plain Anatolia rises quickly to the high Anatolian plateau which averages 3000ft above sea level. Anatolia is the source of the Tigris and Euphrates which linked it with the ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia. Anatolia has been home to many great ancient and classical civilisations many of whom have only been discovered in the last 150 years. The Hittite Empire was unknown until the early 1900's and its secrets are still being discovered today. Its capital was in Hattusa in northern Anatolia and at its height the Hittite Empire rivalled Egypt for supremacy in the western Mediterranean. The diversity of civilisations in Anatolia is incredible. Since the inhabitants of Catalhoyuk created the biggest Neolithic settlement yet found Anatolia has given rise to the Uratian's, Lydian's, Lycian's, Phrygians as well as the Ionic Greek settlements along the coast and many many more smaller civilisations and kingdoms. Pictures photos images of Minoan archaeological site, Minoan historic sites and Minoan Museum antiquities, artefacts & art. The Minoan civilisation was a Bronze Age Aegean civilization which flourished on the island of Crete primarily from c. 3000 BC around 1100 BC. The Minoan civilisation was so named by Sir Arthur Evans excavations at Knossos led him to believe that he had discovered the Palace of King Minos, identified it with the fable of the Minotaur, and so he named the civilisation the Minoans. It is not known what the people who inhabited Crete at the time called themselves so the word “Minoan” has become an accepted term. A sophisticated civilisation did though inhabit Crete and nearby Aegean Islands at this time and they shared a common culture as can be seen from the Minoan antiquities that have been excavated on Crete and Akrotiri on Santorini Island. Massive building complexes like Minoan Knossos and Phaistos have been interpreted as Minoan Palaces due to their monumental buildings with administrative purposes, as evidenced by large archives unearthed by archaeologists. Each Minaon palace excavated to date has unique features, but they also share aspects which set them apart from other structures. Minoan palaces are often multi-story, with interior and exterior staircases, lightwells, massive columns, storage areas and courtyards. The earliest Minoan palace was Malia which dates to around 3000 BC, the most famous though is Knossos. Architecture during the First Palace Period is identified by a square-within-a-square style; Second Minoan Palace Period construction has more internal divisions and corridors. The Palace of Knossos was the largest Minoan palace. The palace is about 150 meters across and it spreads over an area of some 20,000 square meters, with its original upper levels possibly having a thousand chambers. The palace is connected to the mythological story of The Bull of Minos, since it is in this palace where it was written that the labyrinth existed. One of the most endearing legacies left by the Minoans is their art and artefacts. The largest collection of Minoan art is in the museum at Heraklion, on the northern coast of Crete. Minoan art and other remnants of material culture, especially the sequence of ceramic styles. Minoan artworks from Akrotiri, a buried Minoan town discovered on Santorini Island, can be seen in Athens Archaeological Museum. Pictures images photos of Ancient Mycenaean Antiquities, art and historical archaeological sites. Mycenaean Greece was the last phase of the Bronze Age in Ancient Greece, spanning the period from approximately 1750–1050 BC. It represents the first advanced and distinctively Greek civilization in mainland Greece with its palatial states, urban organization, works of art, and writing system. The most prominent site was Mycenae after which the culture of this era is named. Other centers of power that emerged included Pylos, Tiryns, Midea in the Peloponnese, Orchomenos, Thebes, Athens in Central Greece and Iolcos in Thessaly. The Mycenaean Greeks introduced several innovations in the fields of engineering, architecture and military infrastructure, while trade over vast areas of the Mediterranean was essential for the Mycenaean economy. Their syllabic script, the Linear B, offers the first written records of the Indo-European Greek language. Mycenaean Greece was dominated by a warrior elite society and consisted of a network of palace states that developed rigid hierarchical, political, social and economic systems. At the head of this society was the king, known as a wanax. Paul Williams picture galleries of Ancient Assyrian art, artefacts and antiquities. The Assyrians were one of the 4 great Empires that dominated the Middle East and the eastern Mediterranean in the ancient Period. The Assyrians were known for their ruthlessness and brutality. They dominated through the threat of devastation if their commands was not followed. Vassal states that rebelled were destroyed and any that survived were deported from their city. We know this because the Assyrians left huge relief panels in the ruins of their palaces that not only depict their exploits but are also covered in cuneiform writings that tell us what they did. Assyrian art is meticulous and highly detailed. Originally the artworks would have been painted but today were are left with wonderful stone sculpture and relief panels that show the high level of sophistication Assyrian artists had reached. Assyrian art is though about propaganda depicting Assyrian kings as victors in battle, as great hunters in lion hunts or conversing with the Gods. Pictures, Images and photos of Museum Antiquities from Ancient Babylon to download or buy as prints on line. Babylon was the capital city of the ancient Babylonian empire, which itself is a term referring to either of two separate empires in the Mesopotamian area in antiquity. These two empires achieved regional dominance between the 19th and 15th centuries BC, and again between the 7th and 6th centuries BC. The city, built along both banks of the Euphrates river, had steep embankments to contain the river's seasonal floods. One of the most famous stele antiquities from Babylon is the Code of Hammurabi is a Babylonian legal text composed c. 1755–1750 BC. It is the longest, best-organised, and best-preserved legal text from the ancient Near East. It is written in the Old Babylonian dialect of Akkadian, purportedly by Hammurabi, sixth king of the First Dynasty of Babylon. The primary copy of the text is inscribed on a basalt or diorite stele 2.25 m (7 ft 4+1⁄2 in) tall. Our Babylon annuities collection also contains glazed tile panels from the Ishtar Gate. The reconstruction of the Ishtar Gate in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin The Ishtar Gate was the eighth gate to the inner city of Babylon. It was constructed in about 575 BCE by order of King Nebuchadnezzar II on the north side of the city. It was part of a grand walled processional way leading into the city. The walls were finished in glazed bricks mostly in blue, with animals and deities in low relief at intervals, these also made up of bricks that are molded and colored differently. When German archaeologists excavated in Babylon in the 1930s, they dismantled the Ishtar Gate and packed it up to take with them to Berlin. It was meticulously reconstructed in the Pergamon Museum. • Cycladic civilisation Ancient Greek Artefacts art - Photos Pictures Images

Pictures images and photos of the ancient Cycladic Civilisation antiquities of the greek Cycladic Islands, Greece. Cycladic culture or Cycladic civilisation was a Bronze Age culture (c. 3200–c. 1050 BC) found throughout the islands of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea. The initial archaeological excavations of the 1880s were followed by systematic work by the British School at Athens and by Christos Tsountas, who investigated burial sites on several islands in 1898–99 and coined the term "Cycladic civilization". Interest then lagged, but picked up in the mid-20th century, as collectors competed for the modern-looking figures that seemed so similar to a sculpture by Jean Arp or Constantin Brâncuși. Sites were looted and a brisk trade in forgeries arose. The context for many of these Cycladic Figurines has thus been mostly destroyed; their meaning may never be completely understood. Other mysterious discoveries include the Cycladic frying pans, whose original functions remain unknown. Early Cycladic culture evolved in three phases, between c. 3300 and 2000 BC, when it was increasingly submerged in the rising influence of Minoan Crete. The best-known art of this period are the marble figures usually called "idols" or "figurines", though neither name is exactly accurate: the former term suggests a religious function which is by no means agreed on by experts, and the latter does not properly apply to the largest figures, which are nearly life size. • Ancient Egyptians - Art Artefacts Antiquities - Pictures & Images of -
    20 galleries
Over 4000 stunning pictures image photos of Ancient Egyptian Antiquities and treasures from the great museums of Europe. Ancient Egypt is the best known of the ancient civilisations thanks to the incredible number of antiquities that survived the millennia hidden in lost burial tombs. The religious beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians and the burial practises of the elites required that huge tombs should be built, the biggest of which can be seen as pyramids at Giza, that were filled with all the treasures and everyday goods, from furniture to food, that the deceased would need in the afterlife. Many of the tombs were in secret underground chambers and were lost until rediscovered by the early archaeologists of the 18th century. Some tombs, such as the famous tomb of Tutankhamun, were in tact and the grave goods and hieroglyphic texts revealed the world of the ancient pharaoh's in minute detail. Ancient Egyptian developed over 30 dynasties and 2500 years into a complex society with a well defined pantheon of gods and religious beliefs. This is reflected in ancient Egyptian art in statues and the relief sculptures of funereal stele as well as tomb and temple wall art. Apart from the pyramids one of the great symbols of the ancient Egyptians was the sphinx statue of which the Great Sphinx of Giza is the most famous. Our picture images in this gallery contain photos of Sphinx statues that were excavated over 200 years ago. A typical ancient Egyptian sphinx statue is a mythical creature with the head of a man, and the body of a lion lying down with head up and looking forward. Sculpture and statues were important in ancient Egyptian art both as gigantic statues to small figurines and statuettes. Statues of the gods are found in tombs but also statues in wood, stone, ceramic and bronze of "servants" of all kinds from bakers to cooks who will serve the deceased in the next life. Tombs and temples are covered entirely in relief sculptures and hieroglyphic texts. The sculptures often show the deceased in adoration to a god or group of gods. the texts are often magic spells to help the deceased pass into the afterlife. Complicated spells and rituals were written on papyrus scrolls known as "the book of the dead" which are meant to prepare the deceased to make entry into the afterlife possible. The body of the deceased is mummified to keep it intact for the journey and is protected in a sarcophagus or wood coffin. Although the styles of Egyptian art changed over time, the religious beliefs and gods seemed to have remained consistent for 2000 years . This important archive of Hittite art & artefacts pictures & images has taken over 7 years so far to create. For the first time this unique and comprehensive collection of Hittite artworks brings major Hittite art into one place for academic, students and enthusiasts to browse or download. The Hittites have left us with some of the most endearing art of the ancient world. The Hittites were incredibly superstitious peoples and made virtually created a God for nearly ever object and place in their lives. As they conquered people they adopted their Gods so the Hittite pantheon is vast. The Hittites depicted their Gods in their art and sculpted relief panels. These relief sculpture panels lined the walls of the Hittite palaces. Monumental Hittite art relief panels show the complexity of Hittite beliefs. They depict half man half beast Gods as well as extremely creative depictions of all sorts of deities. The child like naivety of the Hittite style makes us warm to them as a people but in reality the Hittites ran a brutal war machine that swept out of Anatolia to become one of the great Empires of the ancient Near East. The MuseoPics Hittite art picture galleries are the most complete and best collection of Hittite art on the internet. • Nuragic Nuraghe Towers & Nuragic Artefacts of Sardinia - Pictures & Images -

Pictures photos images of Nuragic Nuraghe fortifications and Nuragic artefacts and antiquities of Sardinia. The Nuragic civilisation, also known as the Nuragic culture, was a civilization or culture on Sardinia which lasted from the 18th century BC up to the Roman colonisation in 238 BC. Tholos Nuraghe first appeared in Sardinia around the 16th -15th centuries BC in the so called Nuragic 1B phase. An incredible 6500 nuraghe were built in Sardinia of which about 500 have been excavated. Many have disappeared, dismantled after the 19th century enclosure act led to the use of Nuraghe stones for filed walls. In its simplest form a Nuraghe is a flat topped conical tower built of dry stone walls. The stones were usually dressed in a T shape to make a good fit between them. Stone models of Nuraghe towers show that they were topped with a flat terrace with an overhanging parapet around its outer edge. The interiors had high chambers with ogive tholos shaped roofs resembling beehives in shape and commonly found in the Aegean civilisations of the Mediterranean such as the Mycenaeans who covered Tholos chambers in earth. The Nuragic people built free standing Nuraghe with Tholos chambers and the careful use of gigantic stones meant that the Nuragic Nuraghe were the highest structures of the Bronze age Mediterranean second only to the pyramids of Giza. Access to the Nuraghe towers was almost always through a ground floor entrance although some Nuraghe had first floor entrances that increased their defences. Inside the entrances a long corridor ran through the massively wide walls to the inner chamber.Nuraghe were built with a maximum of 3 floors that got narrower towards the top of the tower. The simplest Nuraghe had one tower but in order to build higher Nuraghe towers bastion walls with towers were built around the base of the central tower to support it. Between the 14th and 9th centuries BC, Nuragic Phase II-III, multiple towered Nuraghe were being built. Nuraghe Arrubiu has a five towered bastion around its central tower and Nuraghe Losa has a 3 towers It seems unlikely that they were the dwellings of a ruling family as they are not really built with living in mind with few windows or fire places. Most archaeologists seem to agree that the Nuraghe had both military and civil functions. It is possible that different nuraghe filled different functions as some are simple in design and some have great defensive complexities built into them. Some believe that Nuraghe were religious buildings but as the Nuraghe design is unique in the Mediterranean it is impossible to look at any similar buildings anywhere else for guidance as to use. • Classical Era Art Artefacts & Antiquities - 700 BC - 500 AD - Pictures & Images
    145 galleries
Pictures of Classical era artefacts, antiquities of the Etruscans, Lycians, Greeks & Romans. Classical Antiquity stated in about the 8th century BC with the anarchic era and ended around the 5th century AD when the western Roman Empire collapsed. Of course its influence is still with us today as can be seen in the Greco-Roman collections of every major art museum and in the neo-classical fronts of public buildings throughout the Western World. Classical Antiquity started when the city states of the Eastern Mediterranean, in particular the Greek City States, grew in power and turned art, architecture, writing and philosophy into high culture. Hellenic historic art spread to other cultures around the Mediterranean and its influences can be found in Etruscan and Lycian historic art. The Romans loved Greek culture and when they eventually conquered all of the Mediterranean they spread Greco-Roman art and architecture that is familiar to all of us today. Much of the Greek sculpture of Classical Antiquity only exists as Roman copies of earlier Greek originals. This makes dividing Classical Antiquity into Greek separate from Roman impossible. The Romans occupied the Greek cities of Magna Greca in present and southern city as well as all the Greek City States of the Eastern Mediterranean. This makes separating Ancient Greek architecture from Roman architecture difficult. Great Greek Doric Temples were left standing when the Romans occupied Greek Cities and redevelopment was carried out in a Greek Style. Many Greco-Roman historic artefacts survive from Classical Antiquity and our great museums exhibit incredible collections of Classical Period sculpture, pottery, mosaics and frescoes as well as every day objects from all the civilisations of the ancient Mediterranean. Museopics - Photos and pictures of Ancient and Classical Greek art, statue, and Greek architecture. One of the earliest Ancient Greek civilisation were the Mycenaeans, whose two great cities of Mycenae and Tiryns feature in Homers writings. The so called Minoans were closely related to the Mycenaeans but both were swept away in the 12th century BC by the collapse of the civilisations in the Aegean and Middle East possible due to invasion. As new civilisations emerged in the area, what we know as ancient Greece was born. Greece as a single political entirety as we know it today never existed in Ancient times. The Greek world was made up of separate Greek states operating independently yet still recognising that they had a common identity in being Greek. Styles of architecture and art were adhered to by the separate states yet they fought each other as if they were fighting foreigners. The Greek Olympic Games was devised as a way to try and defuse rivalry between the Greek city states but rarely did the Greeks come together to fight as one unit. Much of conventions and styles of our modern art, literature , theatre and architecture evolved in the Classical Greek period spanning the 9th – 6th century BC. The creative explosion of the Classical Greeks created the foundations that were eagerly adopted by the Romans, the Renaissance and by Palladio and the Neo-Classical movement of the 118th and 19th century. The evolution of Greek art and architecture created a bed rock from which all modern art has evolved. PHOTO ANTIQUITIES COLLECTIONS at: https://funkystock.photoshelter.com/p/museum-antiquities

Pictures photos and images of Etruscan art and antiquities. Etruscan art was produced by the Etruscan civilization in central Italy between the 10th and 1st centuries BC. From around 750 BC it was heavily influenced by Greek art. Particularly strong in this tradition were figurative sculpture in terracotta (especially life-size on sarcophagi or temples), wall-painting and metalworking especially in bronze. Jewellery and engraved gems of high quality were produced. Etruscan sculpture in cast bronze was famous and widely exported, but relatively few large examples have survived (the material was too valuable, and recycled later). The Etruscans were very accomplished sculptors, with many surviving examples in terracotta, both small-scale and monumental, bronze, and alabaster. However, there is very little in stone, in contrast to the Greeks and Romans. Terracotta sculptures from temples have nearly all had to be reconstructed from a mass of fragments, but sculptures from tombs, including the distinctive form of sarcophagus tops with near life-size reclining figures, have usually survived in good condition, although the painting on them has usually suffered. Small bronze pieces, often including sculptural decoration, became an important industry in later periods, exported to the Romans and others. See the "Metalwork" section below for these, and "Funerary art" for tomb art. The Etruscan paintings that have survived are almost all wall frescoes from tombs, mainly located in Tarquinia, and dating from roughly 670 BC to 200 BC, with the peak of production between about 520 and 440 BC. The frescoes are created by applying paint on top of fresh plaster, so that when the plaster dries the painting becomes part of the plaster, and consequently an integral part of the wall. Colors were created from ground up minerals of different colors and were then mixed to the paint. Fine brushes were made of animal hair. Pictures and Images of Phrygian archaeological sites of ancient Phrygia , Phrygian art & artefacts from Anatolia, Turkey. The Phrygian Civilisation Phrygians, who were called in the ancient sources as Bryg or Brigs, were one of the Thracian peoples that migrated from Macedonia and Thrace to Anatolia through the Bosporus, settled in the Sangarios River Valley, and continued to move south and eastward, into the Anatolian heartland. It is widely accepted that the Thracian migrations began ca. 1200 BC and lasted nearly 400 years. . The heartland of Phrygia was the Sangarios River Valley, with the capital at Gordion (Polath-Yassihoyuk), but evidence of Phrygian culture has been found in many areas of central Anatolia. The first king of the Phrygian Kingdom known in history is Gordios. After Gordios, his son Midas, who was called Mita of the Mushki people in Assyrian sources, became the king and was known in ancient legends as the king who turned anything he touched into gold. It is not clear how and when the Phrygian Kingdom ceased to exist politically. Archeological data shows that there was stability and prosperity at Gordion in the late 7th century BC, which means that the kingdom was still independent by the time of the Halys (Kizilirmak) campaign (590 BC) of the Lydian king Alyattes (610-560BC) , as Herodotus reports. Neither in western nor in eastern sources is there any solid evidence for the successors of Midas. The powerful influence of Phrygian culture survived until the appearance of Christianity in the region at the end of Roman rule. The Phrygians worshipped the Mother Goddess, called Matar (Mother), Matar Areyastin, or Matar Kubileya / Kubeleya. The Phrygian Mother Goddess cult was adopted by Greeks and Romans and was united with their religious beliefs under the names of Cybele and Magna Mater. The Phrygian Mother Goddess Matar Kubileya was believed to be the owner of the mountains, animals, cities and agriculture, the protector of young girls, and the symbol of the nature, fertility and abundance. Phrygians located their cult places in nature as they believed the goddess existed on the grass near the fresh water springs, in the wooded desolate nature, on the rocky places, and on the mountains. They carved facades, altars and niches on the rocks and worshipped The Mother Goddess Matar Kubeleya in front of them. The Phrygian population was mainly comprised of a peasant class who lived on agriculture and livestock. Weaving was also an important economy for the Phrygians. Phrygian textiles, woven with geometric motifs, were among the popular goods in the ancient world. According to Pliny, needle lace was another Phrygian invention, and because of that clothes with needle lace were called Phrygian. Pictures of Roman art, Roman historical places and architecture including Roman mosaics, fresco paintings and sculptures and Roman archaeological sites. This picture collection also includes images of the Eastern Roman Byzantines. The Romans built one of the greatest Empires the world has ever seen. The Roman Empire stretched all around the Mediterranean into the Middle East, south into Northern Africa and as far North as Hadrian Wall in England and to the Rhine and Danube. The Romans were great innovators but they also great fans of the Ancient Greeks so much of Roman art and architecture is lifted directly from the Ancient Greeks. Many of the Roman statues that we call Roman Statues are facsimile copies of Ancient Greek statues. The Romans used the great architectural Orders of the Ancient Greeks as templates fro their monumental and religious buildings. The colosseum uses the three great Greek order column styles, Doric, Corinthian and Ionic, to support its three tiered construction. By copying of Greek styles the Romans rooted the classical world into the base framework of what would evolve to become Europe but they also evolved the art to make it their own eventually. Recent analysis has indicated that Roman art is a highly creative pastiche relying heavily on Greek models but also encompassing Etruscan, native Italic, and even Egyptian visual culture. Stylistic eclecticism and practical application are the hallmarks of much Roman art. Roman art came into its own by the 1st century BC. The Romans evolved the idea of the Bust, a head and shoulders sculpture without any arms. These Roman busts gives us a startling real depiction of Roman nobility and rulers. The busts depicted the sitter warts and all but the first Emperor , although not proclaimed at the time, Augustus changed this when he took over the control of his depiction and started the convention of vanity depictions that left there sitters forever young and perfect. Depictions were important to the Romans. The Nobility had rooms with sculpted busts of their parents, grand parents and great great grandparents. This connection with the past seemed to be important in helping define to young Romans what it was to be Roman. The Roman wealthy build great villas lavishly decorated with mosaic floors and painted walls. For those that could not afford the real thing, trompe l’oeil marble walls were painted with expensive looking lavish wall hangings. The greatest demonstration of Roman mosaic art is in the Villa Romana del Casale in Sicily. The Villa was possibly built by Emperor Maximian as his retirement home and thanks to a landslide the mosaics remained undisturbed until 1929 . 30 galleries
Index to the biggest web collection of pictures & images of Roman mosaic from all regions of the ancient Roman Empire. At its height the Roman Empire controlled the whole of the Mediterranean stretching north as far as northern Britain. Roman cities and villas followed the same layouts in all parts of the Empire. Every town had a public baths where Romans whiled away the day. The floors of the baths were covered in mosaics. Every great villa of the Roman Empire had decorative mosaics covering its floors and, even though the quality of craftsmanship of the mosaics varied enormously between regions, the content of the mosaics was similar in all parts of the Roman Empire. Up until the 4th century Romans were pagans and loved the stories of the Greeks Gods and their exploits. It is to be expected therefore that mythical stories were a popular theme for Roman mosaics. The Romans loved visual twists and geometric shapes and these are used in most Roman mosaics as borders of panels that contain the main narrative of the mosaic. The intricacy of the geometric shapes in Roman mosaics is incredible. From Gordian knots that are so cleverly tied that they are impossible to untie, to 2 dimensional boxes that look like they are 3 dimensional. Coloured ropes made out of mosaic edge mosaics that fill the whole floor space of Roman Villas. By the 3rd century AD the best makers of mosaics worked in the province of Africans, centred on present day Tunisia. The North Africa Proconsularis was a major wheat, olive oil and wine producer as it is today. The Romans who lived there grew wealthy and could afford mosaics for their villa floors that were of such great intricacy and richness that we still marvel last the skill of the mosaic makers today. Their reputation meant that they were in demand by wealthy patron across the Roman Empire. Great villas like that of the Villa Romana de Casale in present day Sicily bear all the hall marks of north African mosaic makers. The Roman mosaics from Lods, present day Israel, and the great Palace in Constantinople, present day Istanbul, also bear the hallmarks of the North African Roman mosaic style. The Romans took mosaic making to a high art and made sumptuous artworks from tiny glazed or glass tessellation's that often survived when the buildings that housed them did not. Roman mosaics offer a glimpse of how Romans thought, how they played and of the things that they found important. Download Pictures and images of Roman mosaics or buy as photo art prints on line. • Roman Fresco Wall Art Paintings - Pictures Images Photos
    10 galleries
Pictures images photos of Roman Fresco wall art paintings and Ancient Greek Fresco from the great museums of Europe. Due to its fragile nature Roman Fresco has only survived in tact at a few Roman sites. This even more true of Greek Fresco which the Romans copied. In the mid-5th century BC, the most famous Greek artists were Polygnotos, noted for his wall murals, and Apollodoros, the originator of chiaroscuro. The development of realistic technique is credited to Zeuxis and Parrhasius, who according to ancient Greek legend, are said to have once competed in a bravura display of their talents, history's earliest descriptions of trompe-l'œil painting. Of the vast body of Roman painting we now have only a very few pockets of survivals, with many documented types not surviving at all, or doing so only from the very end of the period. The best known and most important pocket is the wall paintings from Pompeii, Herculaneum and other sites nearby, which show how residents of a wealthy seaside resort decorated their walls in the century or so before the fatal eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. From Roman Egypt there are a large number of what are known as Fayum mummy portraits, bust portraits on wood added to the outside of mummies by a Romanized middle class; despite their very distinct local character they are probably broadly representative of Roman style in painted portraits, which are otherwise entirely lost. The interiors of Roman villas were highly decorated with mosaic floors and fresco painted wall art. The styles of the decoration changed with successive generations of Romans from full trompe-l’œil panels depicting gardens disappearing into the distance or painted pillars and marble panels to more restrained sombre colours such as dark burgundies and even black that were divided into panel with simple painted garlands of flowers or freezes of figures around a central panel with a scene from mythology or even erotic depictions. The end result was always sumptuous creating rooms with a great sense of style. The best descriptive fresco panels were well accomplished works of art with modelling and shadow detail creating a realistic image. Scenes from mythology were popular with the Romans who pantheon of Gods was huge. Erotic fresco panels from mythology have been constantly mis interpreted by modern eyes as offensive. To Roman eyes most of these scenes depicted moral tales from mythology that would have been viewed by the Romans in a moralistic sense. The erotic panels from the brothels of Pompeii have become notorious but are often misunderstood as pornography rather than moral tales from mythology many of them were. Pictures images photos of Roman statues & Sculpture from archaeological sites and museum exhibits and artefacts. The Romans were very good at taking the best from the people they conquered and they embraced whole heartedly the Gods and culture of the Ancient Greeks who started and created the rules of the classical style that is still be adhered to today. It is hard to divorce Roman statue and sculptural styles from that of the ancient Greeks so the genre is usually referred to as Greco-Roman. Many examples of Greek sculptures only exist today as Roman copies of earlier ancient Greek originals. Good examples of this are the many Roman Venus statues that have been excavated from Roman archaeological sites. The Roman Venus statues were based on earlier Greek statues such the style known as the Venus of Arles ( Greek Goddess Aphrodite), probably a copy of the Aphrodite of Thespiae by fourth century BC Greek Athenian sculpture Praxiteles. The Venus statue known as the “Capitoline Type” was a copy of an earlier Greek statue known as the "Aphrodite of Knidos”. The Romans made faithful copies of these various Venus styles and other earlier Greek statues that wherever they are excavated from all over the old Roman Empire they all followed exactly the same styles. The Romans held their ancestors in great respect and the Roman villas of the wealthy had a room set aside with death masks and sculpted busts of earlier members of their families. Up until Augustus the style of theses statues was very realistic revealing wrinkles, warts and all defects. Augustus though saw the advantage of appearing as a perfect individual as was the first to control and idealise his statues that were erected across the Roman Empire. Augustus saw the power of using art as a propaganda machine and after him all successive Emperors statues and sculptures revealed perfect individuals devoid of imperfections. The monumental art of the Roman Empire was the sculpture. Statues adorned Roman theatres and were at the heart of the inner sanctum of their temples. The Romans adopted the Greek pantheon of Gods often changing their names so that , for example, Aphrodite became Venus. The Romans gave offerings to their many Gods regularly. Mosaic panels in their houses depicted scenes from mythology accompanied by bronze and marble statues of the Gods. Small votive bronze statues were popular and some, such as the erotic statue from Pompeii, have been badly misinterpreted and labeled as erotic when in fact they were moral reminders of acts that would have been familiar myths to Romans. The quality of Roman sculptures is incredible, and their creators were great craftsmen. It is hardly surprising then that when an interest in Roman artefacts was taken up by the Papacy in Rome and Roman sculptures were excavated and their art rediscovered for the first time in 1000 years that they triggered the Renaissance. Pictures of Greco-Roman art, artefacts & Museum antiquities as well as Greco-Roman archaeology sites and historic places . The birth of the style that all western art derives from happened in the ancient Greek city states between about 480BC and 336BC This period is known as the Classical Greek era. The rules developed in this era that governed artworks and architecture are still used as the base points today. The pantheon of Greek gods were made up of deities that looked like humans. They could not be depicted as mere humans though so Greek artists created perfect beings with perfect bodies. The body beautiful was highly prized by the Greeks and the depiction of this perfection led to some of the greatest nude sculptures the world has ever seen. Ancient Greek artists learnt how to turn stone into flesh and make marble figures that looked like they were alive and in action. Greek sculptures like Praxiteles enfaced his sculptures of Aphrodite with sexuality. The Romans were in awe of Greek culture and imitated Greek art to create great monumental art of its own. Revered Greek sculptures were copied by Roman sculptors all over its Empire. Praxiteles style Aphrodite's have been excavated from many Roman archaeological site, as have copies of other Greek sculptures. The Romans in the west continued what became to be known as the Hellenistic style until its collapse in the 6th century AD. It is hard therefore to distinguish clearly between Greek Hellenistic sculptures and Roman sculptures. Up until the time of Augustus, Roman sculptors were incredibly life like portraits that included warts and all. Augustus changed this by controlling what he looked like and how he was depicted across the emerging Roman Empire. After Augustus successive Emperors were depicted more like the gods of ancient Greece. Great monumental statues depicted them in an idealised way with the imperfections removed. The Romans were great interior decorators who covered their floor with mosaics and painted their walls with trompe-l’œil decorations. Many Roman mosaics have survived and tell us a lot about the Romans. The intricate geometric designs that are often use to border mosaic floors tell of the Romans interest in mathematics and illusional designs. Some of the centre mosaic panels the Romans produced were very realistic depicting marine scene, animals and depicting gods and mythical scenarios. The classical and Hellenistic styles were steeped in paganism and it wasn't until the style was revived by the great Renaissance artists that it was used for the representation of the Christian pantheon. By this time the Western Roman Empire, known as the Byzantine, had embraced Orthodox Christianity which banned 3 dimensional representations of christian deities. Photos of pictures and images of Medieval Art of the Middle ages from 500AD to 1500AD and medieval historic places and architecture. The so called Middle adds is one of the most fascinating periods of western history that saw the recreation of civilisation after the collapse of the western Roman Empire. The Early Middle Ages started in darkness from the point of view of the written and artistic archaeological record. Writings and artworks are so sparse from the Early Middle Ages that it has been named the Dark ages. As the emerging Europe pieced itself together culture started to emerge. Initially architecture and art followed what was known of ancient roman designs, this being known as the Romanesque. The High Middle Ages was a period of great creativity and endeavour which led to the Great Gothic churches of northern Europe. The Late middle ages paved the way for the emergence of the Renaissance and the Modern Era. The Middle ages in Europe was dominated by the Christianity of the Roman Catholic church. The Popes of Rome became the most powerful political rulers in Europe. They could crown kings and Emperors and bring them to their knees if they wanted. The explosion of Islam from the East in the 600’s challenged Christian supremacy in western Europe and at one point it looked like Islam might win. In a very short time Christianity was pushed back into northern Europe and even southern Italy fell to Islam. The Islamic presence in Medieval Europe benefited the rise of high culture of the Middle ages. Medieval European Christians had had their links with the past broken and had lost the knowledge of their Greek and Roman ancestors. Islam had kept the works of the great Greek philosophers, mathematicians and scientists alive. By a process of osmosis this knowledge was passed to the craftsmen and artists of the Middle ages. They used the ancient knowledge to create intricate designs for artworks and fashion finer sculptures and eventually to create the soaring Go thic cathedrals that are still awe inspiring. The High and Late Middle Ages were the periods when Europe was thew foundations of the culture that we call European were laid. It is to the nameless arts and stone masons who have enriched our world that the photos in this gallery are dedicated Pictures and images of the art of the middle ages from the great Museums of Europe and the Middle East can be bought on line as photo art prints or downloaded as high resolution stock photos. Pictures photos images of the best medieval historic and archaeological sites in Europe & the Near East. The medieval Middle Ages saw an incredible change in art and architecture innovations. The era started with the Romanesque style. In medieval Romanesque art the style was dominated by the Byzantine style from Constantinople. This meant that figures were 2 dimensional against gold background following the strict icon rules of the Eastern Orthodox church that forbade, as it does today, 3D images and depictions. Although limited in style there are some great highlights of the medieval Romanesque style surviving today especially in Sicily. One of the Byzantine Romanesque artistic jewels can be seen in the Palatine Chapel in the Norman Palace of Palermo. This intimate space build for the Norman Sicilian Medieval Kings is a high point in Medieval civilisation. The mosaics of the Palatine Palace merge Medieval Byzantine with Medieval Arabesque with spectacular results. In Wales great medieval castles were built to subjugate the Welsh. These fairy tale castles are considered to be so important that they are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Medieval Gothic architectural innovations allowed for taller cathedrals to be built with bigger windows than its Romanesque predecessors. This medieval style was known at the time as the French style as it was pioneered during the building of Saint Denis Paris, from where the style led to the building of increasingly bigger Gothic medieval Cathedrals across Northern France and into Germany and the British Isles. These new Gothic medieval buildings were decorated with a new Roman Catholic art that used three dimensional statues forbidden by the Byzantine Eastern Orthodox Church. When originally built these medieval Cathedrals and the multitude of statues that adorned their facades would have been painted as can be seen by a laser show that projects the original colouring onto the facade of Amiens Cathedral. Because the Medieval world was overshadowed by the Renaissance and the enlightenment which saw the era as a dark age and named its styles “Gothic” meaning barbaric, it is easy to overlook the innovations and creativity of Medieval artists and builders. It is an incredible testament to Medieval masons that their huge cathedrals still stand and are still awe inspiring 1000 years after they were built. Picture photos images of Byzantine art, mosaics from Byzantine archaeological sites and Byzantine museum artefacts. The so called Roman Byzantine Empire runs roughly from the fall of the western Roman Empire in the 6th century to 1453 when the Byzantine Empire fell to the Ottomans. The Romans loved mosaics and used them as floor coverings throughout their villas as well as in their public buildings. By the 5th century the best Roman mosaic craftsmen were from the Roman Province of Africa which was under Eastern Roman Byzantine control. The Byzantine mosaic artisans took this skill and developed it into an art form that not only decorated Christian monument floors but was also used to make huge mosaics that decorated the walls and apse of churches. During the early middle ages as the fabric of the western Roman Empire unravelled and disappeared, Byzantine Romans with their capital of at Constantinople were the only high civilisation left in the Mediterranean for a while. The Byzantines developed religious art that was based around icons which were two dimensional representations of God and the Christian pantheon that had to adhere to strict rules of representation. Typically Byzantine religious characters and scenes were depicted against a gold background. One of the most iconic Byzantine mosaic images is that of Christ Pantocrator which was often used to decorated the ashes of Byzantine Roman basilicas. The Byzantines conquered Italy for a short period and retained land around Ravenna long enough to build and decorate some great Basilicas with Byzantine Mosaics. Apart from the Karye in Istanbul, the Byzantine mosaics are some of the finest Byzantine mosaics left in tact. The medieval Crusades passed through Byzantine Constantinople on their way to the Holy Land, when the knights returned home they copied Byzantine mosaics in their great cathedrals. Some of the best Byzantine Roman style mosaics can be seen in Sicily where Roger II built an magnificent medieval court to rival that in Constantinople. His private chapel in the Norman Palace in Palermo, The Palatine Chapel, is a masterpiece of the art of the Byzantine mosaic. As the western Mediterranean civilisations recovered Byzantine style mosaics and frescos were typically used in the great Romanesque basilicas as can be seen at Pisa, Venice and Florence. The Romanesque is a period of medieval European history from about the 6th century to the 12th century when it evolved into the Gothic. Romanesque is typified by rounded arches and incorporates architectural elements from the Roman Basilica as well as Eastern Roman, or Byzantine Architecture. In what was often referred to as the “Dark Ages”, the examples of Romanesque architecture and art that are left in Europe proves that this period was far from dark. Romanesque art, which is often highly influence by Byzantine Roman conventions, is vibrant and full of colour. Romanesque churches were filled with religious frescoes and their altars had brightly decorated panels. Just as in the Byzantine Roman Basilicas, the Romanesque churches were designed awe amongst their congregations. The Romanesque used powerful iconography to get the churches message across to its largely illiterate congregation who were further hampered by the fact that church services were then held in Latin, a foreign language for the average peasant of the time. The historical events of the last thousand years has seen the destruction of much of the Romaesque, but what is left are some the great works of art and architecture in Europe. These photo collections explore the Romanesque from Pisa to the Catalan churches of Boi. Photos can be downloaded on line or bought as photo art prints. Pictures of Romanesque architecture and Romanesque historic places. The term loose Romanesque is used by historians to describe a style of early Western civilisation that came from the Romans. In general Romanesque architecture dates from the decline of the Western Roman Empire in the 6th century to the end of the 10th when it was slowly replaced by the Gothic Style. The reason that this definition is vague is because the Romanesque style was still popular in parts of southern Europe up until the Renaissance and the Romanesque style was often fused with the Gothic style to produce hybrid of the two. In general though the Romanesque style of architecture can usually be recognised by its use of the rounded arches used by the Romans (later Gothic Arches are pointed). As rounded arches cannot carry as much load as pointed arches thick pillars were used to support them. Thick walls were also needed to support the great weight of round barrel vaulted ceilings and small windows ensured maximum strength in the walls. Even though elements of Roman architecture can be seen in Romanesque buildings the early Christians that built them avoided the use of pagan architecture such as Greek style pillars and = capitals. A Typical Romanesque church design was based on a Roman Basilica. It had a central Naive often with small Aisles on either side with a row of low arches. High walls then rose directly to the ceiling with small windows high up. The ceiling was either barrel vaulted of a simple wood construction. Following the style of the Eastern Byzantine Romans, the altar was often surrounded by a curved wall with a semi circular apse above which was decorated with mosaics or painting of Jesus Christ or The Virigin Madonna Mary. The inside of Romanesque churches were highly decorated with frescoes or mosaics depicting scenes from the New testament or from the Bible. These would have been difficult for the congregation to see by the light from the small windows, but would have come to life when lit by flickering candle light. Romanesque architecture was spread throughout western Europe by monastic orders such as the Benedictines who built great Romanesque monasteries. The Normans used Romanesque architecture in their great castles such as the Tower of London as well as great cathedrals such as Durham. Wonderful examples of Romanesque building in Italy include the beautifully decorated Florence baptistry. PHOTO ANTIQUITIES COLLECTIONS at: https://funkystock.photoshelter.com/p/museum-antiquities

Pictures, photos and images of historic Norman sites, Norman castles, Churhces and art from England, Sicily & Normandy. The Normans were famed for their martial spirit and eventually for their Catholic piety, becoming exponents of the Catholic orthodoxy of the Romance community.[4] The original Norse settlers adopted the Gallo-Romance language of the Frankish land they settled, their Old Norman dialect becoming known as Norman, Normaund or Norman French. The Normans are noted both for their culture, such as their unique Romanesque architecture and musical traditions, and for their significant military accomplishments and innovations. Norman adventurers played a role in founding the Kingdom of Sicily under Roger II after briefly conquering southern Italy and Malta from the Saracens and Byzantines, and an expedition on behalf of their duke, William the Conqueror, led to the Norman conquest of England at the historic Battle of Hastings in 1066. Norman and Anglo-Norman forces contributed to the Iberian Reconquista from the early eleventh to the mid-thirteenth centuries. the Normans eventually captured Sicily and Malta from the Saracens, under the leadership of the famous Robert Guiscard, a Hauteville, and his younger brother Roger the Great Count. Roger's son, Roger II of Sicily, was crowned king in 1130. The Kingdom of Sicily lasted until 1194, when it was transferred to the House of Hohenstaufen through marriage. Photos images pictures of Medieval Gothic Cathedrals, buildings and Medieval Gothic Art, Gothic pictures and Medieval Gothic statues. Originating in France in the 12th Century and lasting until the 16th century, the Medieval Gothic style swept across northern Europe and into northern Italy and Spain radically changing the style and scale of monumental, civic and religious buildings. This was the period when the great Medieval Gothic Cathedrals of Chartres, Notre Dame and St Denis swept away the Romanesque style that preceded it. Originally the Medieval Gothic Style was known as Opus Francigenum ,”French work”, and was characterised by pointed arch, the ribbed vault and the flying buttress. The term Gothic was first used by Italian painter, architect and writer Giorgio Vasari in his book “Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects”, first published in 1550, as insult against what he saw as a “barbarous German style”. The Italians could not though resist the infectious Medieval Gothic Style with its intricate artistic decorations and sculptures and the Gothic evolved in Italy into Italian Medieval Gothic as can be seen in Pisa, Florence and Milan. One of the great innovation of Gothic architects was the use of a “flying Buttress” and the pointed arch. Romanesque buildings used the weaker rounded arches the Romans used and to get any height in the buildings they needed to use vast pillars and massive external walls with small windows. Medieval Gothic architects worked out that if the external walls had external buttresses which took to forces of the wall, they could not only build higher walls but also lighter walls that could have very large windows which used stron pointed arches. The result of these innovations created vast spaces flooded with light the like of which had never been seen before. This then led to the art of the stained glass window which not only allowed more opportunities to illustrate the Christian message to the illiterate masses, but also made the interiors of the great Medieval Cathedrals even more magical bathing them in multicoloured light. The great Gothic cathedrals of Northern Europe and still imposing awe inspiring buildings today so it is difficult to imagine the impact of such structures on peasants who lived in small thatched wooded houses. The height of the Cathedrals meant that they were and still are visible from miles away as great houses of God stamping the might of the Catholic church on the area. Pictures photos images of Islamic art, artefacts, antiquities and historic places. In the 630s AD Arab hordes suddenly swept out of the desert of Arabia taking the great Byzantine Roman Empire, that ruled North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean, by surprise. In just 90 years Islamic forces had conquered the whole of North Africa and the Middle East. The great Islamic Empires that came into existence from this date absorbed the culture of the people they conquered and fused western styles with eastern styles to create Arabesque art and architecture. Islam and Judaism forbid the representation of religious characters as it is would be breaking the rule forbidding the worship of idols. This is why there are no representations of the Profit Mohammed in the Islamic tradition. Arabs became great mathematicians and used this shill to create intricate geometric designs in tiles to decorate the inside of their Mosques and Palaces. Mathematical designs were used in the Mocarabe Honeycomb plasterwork that can be seen in the Alhambra Palace and in the great Berber Palaces of North Africa. Intricate geometric designs were made out of wood to make highly designed door panels. The overall effect of the Arabesque can be overwhelming as can be seen in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul where the walls are covered in intricate geometric Iznik tiles from the floor to the ceiling. Islamic art is difficult to characterizse because it covers a wide range of lands, periods, and genres, including Islamic architecture, Islamic calligraphy, Islamic miniature, Islamic glass, Islamic pottery, and textile arts such as carpets and embroidery. It comprises both religious and secular art forms. Religious art is represented by calligraphy, architecture and furnishings of religious buildings, such as mosque fittings (e.g., mosque lamps and Girih tiles), woodwork and carpets. Secular art also flourished in the Islamic world, although some of its elements were criticised by religious scholars. Photos pictures images of Islamic historic sites and Islamic art. Islam has produced some of the great architecture of the world. Stretching from China to North Africa Islamic architects have stamped their mark on half the globe. Islamic Architectural art is known as arabesque which is a form of artistic decoration consisting of surface and relief decorations based on repeating and linear patterns of scrolling and interlacing foliage, tendrils or plain lines. This builds in complexity to produce the incredible Mocarabe Arabesque stalactite plaster work ceilings such as those in the Alhambra Palace Granada. Pre Islamic Arabesque influences can be seen in the Byzantine Roman column capitals of Hagia Sophia ( present day Istanbul) and the early examples of Muqarnas can be found in pre Islamic Samara in Iraq. In Arabesque plasterwork calligraphy with religious messages is interwoven with geometric deigns. The style is typified by deeply recessed reliefs and long narrow plaster panels with calligraphy which are commonly used above courses of geometric tiles throughout Islamic buildings. Arabesque architectural decorations are utilised in all aspects of Islamic architecture. Exterior and interior surfaces are often completely covered with geometric tiles and doorways, niches, window arches and ceiling are given great attention with incredibly intricate wood and plaster work designs as can be seen in the Mocarabe, Honeycomb work or Stalactite work, in the Alhambra Palace in Granada. Pictures photos images of Christian historic places and Christian artefacts & antiquities. Christianity is an Abrahamic monotheistic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. It is the world's largest religion, with about 2.4 billion followers.] Its adherents, known as Christians, make up a majority of the population in 157 countries. Early Christian art and architecture or Paleochristian art is the art produced by Christians or under Christian patronage from the earliest period of Christianity to, depending on the definition used, sometime between 260 and 525. In practice, identifiably Christian art only survives from the 2nd century onwards. Early Christianity used the same artistic media as the surrounding pagan culture. These media included fresco, mosaics, sculpture, and manuscript illumination. Early Christian art used not only Roman forms but also Roman styles. From these humble beginning the importance of Christian art grew so that by the Middle ages it dominated the vast majority of artistic output. In the 4th century, the rapidly growing Christian population, now supported by the state, needed to build larger and grander public buildings for worship than the mostly discreet meeting places they had been using, which were typically in or among domestic buildings. Pagan temples remained in use for their original purposes for some time and, at least in Rome, even when deserted were shunned by Christians until the 6th or 7th centuries, when some were converted to churches. The usable model at hand, when Emperor Constantine I wanted to memorialize his imperial piety, was the familiar conventional architecture of the basilica. There were several variations of the basic plan of the secular basilica, always some kind of rectangular hall, but the one usually followed for churches had a center nave with one aisle at each side, and an apse at one end opposite to the main door at the other. Adaptations of the Basilica design remained popular up until the Gothic architecture of the medieval era. Pictures, images, photos of the very best of Christian Art and Museum antiquities. Pictures of Gothic sculpture, Romanesque frescoes, medieval Christian art as well as images of early Byzantine Christian mosaics and pictures of Orthodox Icons. For the last 2000 years Christians have lavished their places of worship with Christian art and artworks as can be seen by the pictures and images in this gallery which contains some of the best examples of Christian art from the last 2000 years. Until the Renaissance and the Reformation the biggest benefactors of the arts were the western catholic and eastern Orthodox Churches. Christian art was important to Christian from its inception. Symbols such as the fish were used by early Christians to mark places of worship and to proclaim themselves as Christians in a pagan Roman world. Early Christian churches and places of worship were decorated with mosaics and frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the Bible. As Christians began to venerate their saints and martyrs churches were decorated churches with their images. By the middle ages the iconography of over 5000 saints had been established and the image of Christ as a white and bearded had been fixed. Christian art was accessible to everyone unlike the written teachings of Christianity which were in latin. This allowed the church to control the message to its congregation and Christian art became a way to preach to the faithful. The Last Judgement became an important Christian theme in every major Catholic Cathedral. The medieval Christian artists fervent imagination produced ghoulish images of the damned being tortured in hell that even scared the blood thirsty medieval knights. Such graphic Christian imagery impressed the medieval mind so much that Kings, Barons and Dukes gave richly to the church in hope that their sins would be forgiven in the next world. The Renaissance is seen to be a high point in Christian art with pieces like the Last Judgement and the Sistine Chapel roof being held up as the ultimate masterpieces. This history is very much written from an enlightenment viewpoint and overlooks the great achievements of Byzantine Christian artists and great Christian works of art like the Palatine Chapel interior mosaics in Palermo that blends Christian Byzantine and Islamic art to dramatic effect. The Christian Icons of the Eastern Orthodox faith also reached a point of great beauty but the rigidity of the stylistic approach imposed by the Orthodox church stopped them reaching a point that expresses realistic emotions. When Africa Proconsularis fell to the 67th century Islamic conquests, the old Roman cities were left ruined by the new Isalmic rulers who built new cities and can be seen in our Byzantine Christian picture & image collection. This left a rich Roman archaeology that lay undisturbed until recent times when the Roman mosaics were excavated and exhibited in the museums of Tunisia, the biggest collection being in the Bardo National Museum Tunis. Pictures of Capo di Ponti Prehistoric Museum and the Rock Engravings Museum Parks of Valle Comenica , Italy. In the Valle Comenica in northern Italy can be found the largest area of prehistoric rock art sculptures in the world. One of its Neolithic parks, The Naquane National Park, has Rock Engravings that extend over 14 hectares, and this is just one of the many prehistoric Rock Engraving parks in the area. This Rock Engravings collection of photos has photos from many of the open air museum parks of Valle Camonica and from the artefacts held in the Capo di Ponti Prehistoric Museum. The Rock Engraving of Valle Comenica give us an insight into the lives of Neolithic people who lived in the area. Some of the Rock Engravings are maps of the area with recognisable land formations and rivers that seem to have been made to show ownership by its makers of areas of land. The Neolithic Rock Engravings depict the houses people lived in at the time and showed them hunting and fighting. Rock Engravings showing men with oxen and ploughs are the earliest know depictions of farming methods of prehistoric man. The depiction in the Rock Engravings of Valle Camonica also show what animals lived there and were hunted. The Neolithic Rock Engravings of Valle Comenica are so important and extensive that the whole area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pictures of the artefacts and antiquities of the Capitoline Museums Rome. The Capitoline museums are an important museum of Roman artefacts situated in the old Palatine Palace on a hill overlooking the ruins of the ancient Roman forum of Rome. Included in the exquisite exhibits of the The Capitoline museums are the Capitoline Venus and the bronze statue of Marcus Aurelius on horseback as well as remnants of a gigantic statue of Constantine. One of the many styles of Roman Venus, or Aphrodite, statues is named after the The Capitoline Venus statue. It is a "modesty" style with Venus in a pose having possibly been disturbed whist washing. In the Capitoline Venus style she is in the process of hiding her nudity in a modest gesture. The bronze statue of Marcus Aurelius in the Capitoline museums is the original of the copy that stands in the small Capitoline square outside. The bronze is an iconic statue of an Emperor in triumph that has been copied since the Renaissance to depict "The Great". A well known example is the bronze of Cosimo Medici in Florence. Pictures photos images of the art exhibits and antiquities of the National Museum of Catalan Art (Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya) housed in the grand Palau Nacional (National Palace) in Barcelona. For lovers of historic art from the Middle ages to the present the National Museum of Catalan Art (MNAC) is one of the most important museums in the world. Our photo collections take a look at the MNAC Medieval galleries. Its Romanesque art collection majors on rescued frescoes of church interiors of Catalonia. The Romanesque collection shows apse and naive frescoes that were in danger of ruin or of being sold to the USA. Having so many Romanesque church interiors in one place is unique and not only shows the richness of Catalan Romanesque church decoration, but as Medieval Catalonia did not exists in isolation, the frescoes give an incredible insight into what European church decoration of the period looked like. The Romanesque collection alone gives the MNAC a 5 star world museum rating but the Museum has equally important Gothic and Baroque Art collections. The MNAC Gothic collection has wonderful painted altar panels that used to surround the altar tables of Gothic Catalan churches. Highly decorative these Gothic altar panels depict scenes from saints lives, from the life of the Virgin or episodes from the New Testimanet. The MNAC Gothic exhibits give us some idea of what a decorative era this was. With examples of painted beams and wall frescoes art is easy to see that the wealthy Gothic peoples lived in colourful dwellings. The quality of craftsmanship of the Ancient Greek sculptors who made the bronzes was incredible. The perfection that was reached in the Riace Bronzes has rarely been surpassed since. Food pictures of fresh and cooked mushrooms & wild mushrooms to download on line. Culinary mushrooms are edible part of fungi that are either grown commercially of picked wild. The mushroom is the fruiting body of the fungus that grows underground or in trees as an interconnected mesh of filaments known as mycelium. Some of the largest know living organisms on this planet are these interconnected mycelium one of which in the Malheur National Forest in the United States is believed to cover 2,200 acres (8.9 square km) and is believed to be about 2.400 years old. The edible mushrooms that these fungi produce are therefore a small part of the overall organism. Mushrooms grow rapidly from tiny pin shape growths produced by the mycelium. They draw in water and quickly grow into the mushrooms that we recognise as food. Gill underneath the mushroom produce spores that are spread by the wind to produce new fungi. Mushrooms grow into many shapes and colours, and even though some are very poisonous the vast majority are edible. Only a few varieties are prized for cooking. These range from cultivated varieties such as the button, oyster and open cap mushrooms to wild varieties such as ceps, chanterelle and morels. Those with the knowledge eat more wild varieties but as many of the edible wild mushrooms have toxic look alike it is better to buy wild mushrooms from trusted sources. Mushrooms are used in all cuisines of the world and the everyday cultivated mushrooms end up as ingredients in everyday food such as soups to pizza toppings. The rarer mushrooms are used in high cuisine with exotic and fine dining dishes being produced from mushrooms all over the world. Royalty free images galleries of Indian food recipes & spices. Indian Cuisine is one of the 5 great cuisines of the world. Indian cuisine is an awkward term though because it actually encompasses dishes from Pakistan and Bangladesh. The great cuisine of Indian has its roots in the Moghul Court whose fabulous wealth meant that it could afford to develop an sophisticated cuisine. Dishes from Persia were adapted using Indian spices and styles to create the great dishes of Indian cuisine. Strangely though, much of Indian food popular in Britain is an Anglo-Indian invention by Indian Restaurants run by Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Kashmiri chefs. Dishes like Balti curry and Tikka Masala were invented by these creative and enterprising restaurants to create an Indian cuisine that is unknown in India. It is an irony though that Anglo Indian food producers are now starting to export their Anglo Indian sauces to India. Indian food, in all its guises, is an incredibly diverse and exciting cuisine. The British have taken Indian food to their hearts and Tikka Masala was voted their favourite dish for many years. The combination of spices, meat and vegetables served on fragrant rice and eaten with naan bread is an incredible combination bursting with flavour. It is not surprising then that supermarkets in Britain offer a huge selection of Indian ready meals. There is a new wave of Indian restaurants in Britain that are based on Indian cuisine. These are vegetarian, as meat is not eaten by Hindus, and the menus do not have any of the old favourite Anglo Indian recipes. Prashad Indian Restaurant in Bradford is a great example of a real Indian restaurant. Its dishes are fragrant and full of flavours missing from many Anglo Indian restaurants. Prashad demonstrates the depth of Indian cooking and point a way to a future that will be full of new and exciting Indian food. Food pictures and photos of Indian recipe dishes. Food picture galleries, images and photo galleries of traditional British food. British cuisine has been described as "unfussy dishes made with quality local ingredients, matched with simple sauces to accentuate flavour, rather than disguise it. In the eyes of the world British cuisine used to be limited to the full breakfast, fish and chips, and the Christmas dinner. The famous traditional British dishes include the Sunday roast, steak and kidney pie, shepherd's pie, and bangers and mash. Each region of Britain also developed its own regional or local dishes, such as Cornish pasties, the Yorkshire pudding and Cumberland Sausage. The Protestant Reformation in the 16th and 17th centuries introduced a plain and substantial cooking style which remained the mainstay of the British diet. In the 18th and 19th centuries British cuisine was influenced by its colonies in particular the strong, penetrating spices and herbs from India.Britain developed a worldwide reputation for the quality of British beef which led to one if the iconic British meals namely roast beef. The rationing of the second world war, which was not lifted until 1953, led to a generation of cooks that only had memories of traditional British cuisine. This led to a decline in British cuisine that left it with a poor international reputation. The advent in the 1960s of foreign holidays, and foreign-style restaurants in Britain, widened the popularity of foreign cuisine. TV chefs became popular and were responsible for re-educating the British and giving them the skills to cook again. The British were not slow to adopt the cuisine of the immigrants from the old colonies that came to live in Britain. The Indian community opened restaurants and created Anglo-Indian dishes derived from traditional British cuisine, such as roast beef, modified by the addition of Indian-style spices, such as cloves and red chillies. Fish and meat are often cooked in curry form with Indian vegetables. Today the most popular dish in Britain is Chicken Tikka Masala, invented by British Indian chefs. Today British cuisine is creative and diverse. British palettes are used to eating all the foods of the world and the combination of flavours and the search for new techniques has led to Britain having some of the best restaurants in the world. Pubs though still serve up traditional food and fish and chips remain one of the great take away foods enjoyed by millions. China is so big and covers so many diverse cultural regions that the term Chinese cuisines is far more accurate when describing Chinese food. The Chinese cuisines are over 2000 years old and the complexity and sophistication of ancient China allowed the creation of one of the 5 great cuisines of world history. Styles and tastes also varied by class, region, and ethnic background. This led to an unparalleled range of ingredients, techniques, dishes and eating styles in what could be called Chinese food, leading Chinese to pride themselves on eating a wide variety of foods while remaining true to the spirit and traditions of Chinese food culture. The Chinese cuisine that most westerners know is the cuisine of the Chinese restaurant. The British Chinese community is thought to be the oldest Chinese community in Western Europe, with the first Chinese having come from the ports of Tianjin and Shanghai in the early 19th century to settle in port cities such as Liverpool. They opened the first Chinese restaurants in these ports and today every town in Britain has a Chinese take away. Chinese food became popular because of its simple flavoured sauces and cheap ingredients that made it affordable to everyone. Chinese dishes like the spring roll appealed to western tastes. The name is a literal translation of the Chinese chūn juǎn . The fillings, size and outer wraps of spring rolls vary greatly across Asia. Western pallets seem to prefer deep fried crispy spring rolls with sprouted bean fillings with meat or prawns served with a sweet chilli sauce. Noodle Chinese style dishes are very popular with the most common being Chow Mein. For the health conscious the stir fry became a main stay. Many Chinese dishes are cooked quickly in hot oil in a wok. Black bean or sweet and sour sauces are added and the dish is served on rice or noodles.
