National Museum of Catalan Art - Artefact Antiquities - Barcelona { 11 galleries }

Pictures photos images of the art exhibits and antiquities of the National Museum of Catalan Art (Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya) housed in the grand Palau Nacional (National Palace) in Barcelona. For lovers of historic art from the Middle ages to the present the National Museum of Catalan Art (MNAC) is one of the most important museums in the world. Our photo collections take a look at the MNAC Medieval galleries. Its Romanesque art collection majors on rescued frescoes of church interiors of Catalonia. The Romanesque collection shows apse and naive frescoes that were in danger of ruin or of being sold to the USA. Having so many Romanesque church interiors in one place is unique and not only shows the richness of Catalan Romanesque church decoration, but as Medieval Catalonia did not exists in isolation, the frescoes give an incredible insight into what European church decoration of the period looked like. The Romanesque collection alone gives the MNAC a 5 star world museum rating but the Museum has equally important Gothic and Baroque Art collections. The MNAC Gothic collection has wonderful painted altar panels that used to surround the altar tables of Gothic Catalan churches. Highly decorative these Gothic altar panels depict scenes from saints lives, from the life of the Virgin or episodes from the New Testimanet. The MNAC Gothic exhibits give us some idea of what a decorative era this was. With examples of painted beams and wall frescoes art is easy to see that the wealthy Gothic peoples lived in colourful dwellings. Our pictures of the Museum of the Capitoline Museums are exclusive to Funkystock Photo Library. (Property Rights The Trustees of the MNAC Museum)
