British Museum Egyptian antiquities, art and artefact photos , pictures and images.
The department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan holds objects from every stage of the long history of the area, ranging from about 4500 BC to the later 14th century AD. The collection forms one of the most comprehensive and magnificent collections in the world, surpassed only by the Egyptian museum in Cairo. Egyptian antiquities have formed part of the British Museum collection ever since its foundation in 1753 after receiving 160 Egyptian objects[2] from Sir Hans Sloane. After the defeat of the French forces under Napoleon at the Battle of the Nile in 1798, the Egyptian antiquities collected were confiscated by the British army and presented to the British Museum in 1803. These works, which included the famed Rosetta Stone, were the first important group of large sculptures to be acquired by the Museum. Thereafter, the UK appointed Henry Salt as consul in Egypt who amassed a huge collection of antiquities, some of which were assembled and transported with great ingenuity by the famous Italian explorer Giovanni Belzoni.

Red granite sarcophagus lid of Setau: a massive anthropoid sarcophagus lid inscribed with texts for the viceroy of Kush, Setau. On the lid, beneath the head, is a seated figure of Nut, who is named, and beneath this a single column of text with a prayer to Nut on behalf of Setau. A line of text runs around the edge of the lid below the shoulders, interrupted at intervals by short lines of text inscribed at right angles to the main line, creating six panels on the lower half of the lid. The main text consists of two balancing inscriptions which begin at each shoulder, both containing standard sarcophagus texts addressed to Geb and Nut. The transverse bands of text, five on each side, presumably continued from the lid down the sides of the sarcophagus which is now lost. In the four upper texts on each side Setau, whose name is lost, is described as a person revered before various funerary and canopic deities: on one side [name lost] either Hapy or Amsety, Anubis, Duamutef and Geb; and on the other side [name lost] either Hapy or Amsety, Anubis, Qebhsenuef and Dunanwy. The fifth transverse line on each side contains the name and titles of Setau. The six panels on the lower part of the sarcophagus contain figures in sunk relief and incised texts. In the upper four panels Setau is shown adoring various deities before each of whom is an altar with offerings: Osiris in the upper two scenes; Anubis and Hapy in the lower scenes. The two panels at the foot of the coffin depict, in opposite order to the rest of the scenes and inscriptions, the goddesses Isis and Nephthys in an attitude of mourning. The lid has been broken in two and rejoined in modern times. The foot of the lid is damaged and the foot-end is lost. There are no traces of colour.<br />

In the upper register a herd of cattle is brought to Nebamen; in front of the cattle the herdsmen bow down to a standing scribe who records the produce. The vertical hieroglyphic caption is damaged, and only a few-phrases can be read. In the lower register a man drives cattle towards some seated scribes. Two horizontal registers of hieroglyphs survive above.<br />
<br />
The alternating colours and patterns of cattle create a superb sense of animal movement. The artists have omitted some of the cattle’s legs to preserve the clarity of the design.<br />

‘Come on! Get away! Don’t speak in the presence of the praised one! He detests people talking . . . Pass on in quiet and in order . . . He knows all affairs, does the scribe and counter of grain of [Amun], Neb[amun]’.<br />
