Salzburgh old town, Altstadt, is situated on a rocky outcrop next to the River Salzbach at the foot of the Alps in western Austria. Its high defensive position allowed the city to control the trade route that follows the salzbach river south to Slovania & Italy.

The Altstadt is dominated by the Barque towers of its many churches of the Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical State of the Holy Roman Empire which was ruled by the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg from 1213–1803.

Salzburgh remained a staunch Roman Catholic city during the Reformation expelling all Protestants from the city and state on 31 October 1731.

Salzburg was the birthplace of 18th-century composer Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart on 27 January 1756 who was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical era. He composed over 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music. He is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers. Mozart was employed as a court musician by the ruler of Salzburg, Prince-Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo until 1777 when he left Salzburg to search for a position that would allow him to write operas.

Each Christmas the centre of Salzburgh fills with market stall selling hand crafted Christmas decorations & gifts. It is one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in Europe and the goods on sale are carefully regulated to keep mass produced products out.
