Pictures photos Images of Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Italy. Situated on the Ligurian coast in Italy are 5 villages known as the Cinque Terre. Vernazza is a charming fishing village and port who multicoloured houses cling to the sides of a steep ravine that cuts its way into the mountains behind. Until a coastal railway tunnelled under the Cinque Terre linking its villages, Vernazza was cut off from the outside and was only accessible from the sea or by following the pathways that weave their way through the vineyards above the villages. Until the tourists arrive Manarola is still time locked and has not been spoilt in any way. Records of Vernazza as a fortified town date back to 1080 when it was a maritime base for the noble Obertenghi family. As Genoa spread its influence along the Ligurian coast, the noble families pledged their allegiance and by 1209 Vernazza became a vassal town of Genoa. Vernazza was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site List in 1999. Vernazza has a well fortified harbour overlooked by defensive towers and hemmed in by the town on one side and cliff on the other. Even so repeated attacks by Pirates in the 15th century led to a decline in Vernazza’s fortune. The 19th century saw a revitalisation of Vernazza with a return to wine production and the building of the Genoa to La Spezia railway ended Vernazza’s isolation. Vernazza was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site List in 1999.
