Picture of Caernarfon castle, Wales, photo by photographer Paul E Williams. Caernarfon castle is one of the biggest castles built by Edward I in 1283, replacing a Norman Motte & Bailey castle, as part of his plan to secure Wales for the English Crown. The last Welsh Prince of Wales was Llewelyn ap Gruffydd who was killed in Battle against the English in 1282. Edward I promised that the next Prince of Wales would be a prince that was born in Wales and when his son Edward, to become Edward II, was born at Caernarfon castle he made him Prince of Wales and since then the ruling English monarchs heir becomes the Prince of Wales until crowned. Edward, the first English Prince of Wales was invested with the title at Caernarfon castle in 1301 at the age of 16, the current Prince of Wales, Charles, was invested with the title at Caernarfon castle on July 26 1958 aged 9. The new castle of Caernarfon and the fortification of the adjacent town was completed in 1330 at a staggering cost of £20,000 - £25,000. Edward I’s castles in Wales cost so much that they all but bankrupted the Crown so the interior of Caernarfon castle was never fully completed to Edwards plans. As with all of Edward I Welsh castles Caernarfon castle was built so it could be provisioned from the sea in case of siege. Caernarfon castle is easy to recognise as it has distinctive polygonal towers banded with coloured stone. Most of the northern towers had four storeys including a basement but the Eagle Tower, at the western corner of the castle was the grandest with three turrets which were once surmounted by statues of eagles. Between the towers are high curtain walls enclosing a large courtyard area inside. The last fighting Caernarfon castle saw was during the Civil war as a Royalist stronghold. In 1646 after Parliamentarian forces lay siege to Caernarfon the 1st Baron Byron finally surrendered the castle. It was ordered that the castle should be demolished but thankfully for us the order was never carr
