The ancient Uratian iron age fortress of Van, Van, Turkey. The massive stone built Van Fortress was constructed by the ancient kingdom of Urartu between the 9th and 7th centuries BC, The Fortress of Van is the largest example of its kind and overlooks the ruins of Tushpa, the ancient Urartian capital during the 9th century BC and Lake Van beyond. The lower walls of Van Fortress were constructed of basalt, while the upper fortifications were built from mud-bricks. AN inscription of Xerxes the Great from the 5th century BC is inscribed upon a smoothed section of the rock face.
